Women's Basketball and ACS Host Leukemia Awareness Game Jan. 26

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption College Women's Basketball Team, American Cancer Society (ACS) Leukemia Research and Assumption Students Against Cancer are excited to announce their partnership for the Hounds' Leukemia Awareness game on Saturday, January 26, against Saint Rose at 1:30 p.m.

The Assumption women's basketball program is proud to partner with both of these amazing organizations to help bring awareness to, and raise money for those who are currently battling Leukemia as well as those who fought, but lost their fight against this terrible disease.

This game will be dedicated and played in memory of Michael Phayre, brother of head coach Kerry Phayre, who was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in August of 2016 and lost his fight just 15 months later on November 1, 2017. "Michael was just 58 years old when he was diagnosed and one of the healthiest people I knew," said Phayre. "He competed on two ice hockey teams and enjoyed running road races as well. This disease is difficult to overcome and although my brother fought tirelessly for over a year and even went into remission at one point, he was not able to defeat this worthy opponent."

The American Cancer Society for Leukemia Research dedicates itself to patients suffering from all forms of leukemia – acute lymphocytic, acute myeloid, chronic lymphocytic, chronic myeloid, chronic myelomonocytic and childhood leukemia. The ACS estimates that there will be about 61,780 new cases of leukemia in 2019 and about 22,840 people will die of leukemia in 2019. Leukemia as a whole accounts for about three percent of all new cancer cases and four percent of all cancer deaths in the United States.

The women's basketball team and staff encourages everyone to make a donation to help find a cure for leukemia. Please click here to be brought to the donation page. T-shirts will be sold at the game for $10 and all proceeds will go to leukemia research as well. Coach Phayre also encourages everyone to become a bone marrow donor and help save a life.
