Hounds Down Saint Rose in 68-61 Win

Albany, N.Y. (January 8) -- The Assumption College women's basketball team jumped out to a double-digit first-half lead and held off the Golden Knights as the Hounds went wire-to-wire in a 68-61 win at the College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 action at Nolan Gym on Wednesday night.

The Hounds led from the outset in the opening half, quickly building to a double-digit lead at 17-7 midway thru the half following a corner three from senior Tafanie Roye (New Britain, Conn./Capital Magnet Prep). The eventual 12-2 run stretched the lead out to 12 at 21-9 before the Hounds eventually took a 32-19 lead into the halftime break behind nine first-half points from senior Shannon Ray (Yonkers, N.Y./Ursuline Academy). Assumption also held Saint Rose to just 20 percent shooting in the opening half and forced 10 Golden Knight turnovers.

Assumption picked right up where it left off to begin the second as the Hounds quickly extended the lead out to 16 in the opening minute following a putback from sophomore Kelly Conley (Ellington, Conn./Ellington). A 10-3 run, combined with a defensive effort that held Saint Rose without a field goal for nearly six minutes, helped the Hounds increase the lead to 20 at 50-30 with 10:13 left.

The Hounds led by as many as 24 at 59-35 with 7:35 following a three-point play by freshman Allison Stoddard (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) before a 14-0 Golden Knight run cut the lead down to 10 with under three minutes to play. Assumption extended the back to 13 on a three-point play from junior Caitlin Ackerman (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) with 1:47 left before the Golden Knights closed to within seven late in the 68-61 final. The victory was the fourth in the last five games for the Hounds.

Ray paced the Hounds with 20 points, along with 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds from Ackerman. For the Golden Knights, Jess DeNicola led all scorers with 21 points to go along with 17 points from Desiree Simmons.

With the win, Assumption improves to 8-5 overall and 4-4 in the Northeast-10, while Saint Rose falls to 8-6 overall and 3-5 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Saturday, January 11th as the Hounds play host to the University of New Haven for a 1:30 p.m. start at Laska Gym.
