Worcester, Mass. (December 21) -- In the final game of the first semester, the Assumption College women's basketball team held off visiting Bloomfield College for an 80-70 non-conference victory on Saturday afternoon at Laska Gym.
Assumption took control early on in the wire-to-wire win as the Hounds led by double digits at 18-10 just 8:10 into the game after a layup from senior captain Jamie Insel (Clinton, N.J/Voorhees). The Hounds extended the lead up to as many as 30 at 51-21 with 1:46 remaining in the first half following a three-pointer from senior Shannon Ray (Yonkers, N.Y./Ursuline Academy) as Assumption shot a blistering 65.6 percent from the field in the opening period.
After the hosts took a 53-28 lead into the halftime break, the Deacons opened the second half on a 12-2 run and closed to within 55-40 following a three-point play from sophomore Ariel Wilson with 17:33 left. Bloomfield cut the lead down into single digits once at 58-50 before a quick 7-0 scoring spurt put Assumption back out in front by 15 at 65-50 midway thru the period. The Deacons again cut the lead down into single digits in the final minute after a layup from junior Lauren Deverin, but Ray hit two free throws to cap off the 10-point victory.
Ray paced five Hounds in double figures with 17 points as four of the five starters finished with double digits. Junior Caitlin Ackerman (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) added 14 points, along with 12 from Insel and 10 from senior Tafanie Roye (New Britain, Conn./Capital Prep Magnet). Freshman Johanna Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) posted her first career double-double with a 10-point, 10-rebound effort as she also added two assists and one block in 21 minutes off the bench. Every Assumption player who played pulled down at least one rebound as the Hounds outrebounded the Deacons by a commanding 45-28 margin in their third straight victory.
Four Deacons starters finished in double figures, led by a game-high 21-point effort from senior guard Ivettlis Castro.
With the win, Assumption improves to 7-4 overall on the season, while the Deacons fall to 7-4 after having their three-game winning streak snapped. Assumption now has a 3-0 record against CACC schools this season, also recording wins over Caldwell and Concordia.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, January 4th as the Hounds travel to LIU Post for a 1:30 p.m. start in their final non-conference game of the season.
