Hounds Hold Off Southern N.H., 69-62

Worcester, Mass. (December 10) -- The Assumption College women's basketball team jumped out to a 21-point first-half lead and survived a rally by Southern New Hampshire as the Hounds defeated the Penmen by a 69-62 final on Tuesday night at Laska Gym.

Assumption jumped out to a quick 17-1 lead over the opening 5:30 of the game, capped by a three-pointer from freshman Morgan O'Brien (Reading, Mass./Reading). The Hounds continued to hold a 33-14 edge with 8:11 left before the Penmen cut the lead down to 34-22 on a jumper from Amra Elezovic at the 5:41 mark.

Southern New Hampshire kept the pressure up and cut the lead down to single digits on a free throw from Sara Ryan for the 36-27 margin. The Hounds used a free throw from freshman Allison Stoddard (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) to maintain a seven-point lead with under a minute left before eventually taking a 37-32 lead into the halftime break. The bench scoring was the difference in the opening half as senior Erin Doherty led all scorers with nine points for the Penmen.

After the Hounds extended the lead early in the second, an Elezovic three-point play with 13:13 left pulled the Penmen within 45-40. On the ensuing play, the Penmen pressed Assumption but sophomore Kelly Conley (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) broke thru and went coast-to-coast for the 47-40 edge. That play was followed by a Southern New Hampshire offensive foul on the other end to swing momentum back in favor of the Hounds.

Southern New Hampshire cut the margin down in single digits and clawed back to within 59-54 following another Elezovic three with 2:39 remaining. The Penmen managed to get within three with 32.4 seconds left on a layup from Elezovic before Assumption held on for the seven-point victory.

Three Hounds finished in double figures, led by a 17-point effort from senior guard Shannon Ray (Yonkers, N.Y./Ursuline Academy). Seniors Jamie Insel (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees) and Tafanie Roye (New Britain, Conn./Capital Prep Magnet) joined Ray in double figures with 10 and 13 points each, respectively. Insel added 10 rebounds to cap off the double-double.

Elezovic led all scorers with a 21-point effort as the Penmen had four players in double figures. Bianca Langford posted a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double in the loss as well.

With the win, Assumption improves to 6-4 overall and 3-4 in Northeast-10 play, while Southern New Hampshire falls to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Saturday, December 21st at the Hounds host Bloomfield College for a 1:30 p.m. non-conference matchup.
