Easton, Mass. (December 4) -- On Wednesday night at Merkert Gym, the Assumption College women's basketball team fell to No. 14 ranked Stonehill College in a back-and-forth 79-68 final in Northeast-10 Conference action. The two teams were even at 18-18 thru the first 9:09 of the opening half following a three-pointer from senior Tafanie Roye (New Britain, Conn./Capital Prep Magnet) at the top of the key. The Skyhawks pushed ahead at 23-18 before a quick 6-0 Hounds run, capped by a baseline jumper from senior Shannon Ray (Yonkers, N.Y./Ursuline Academy), put the visitors up by a 24-23 margin. Stonehill called a timeout at that point and put together a quick run before the Hounds tied the game at 29-29 with three minutes remaining.
Assumption closed the period on a 7-2 run that was capped by a three-pointer by freshman Morgan O'Brien (Reading, Mass./Reading) with 39.2 on the clock as the Hounds took the 36-31 lead into the half. Ray led the Hounds with 10 points in the period as the visitors shot 57.7 percent from the field.
Assumption stretched the lead out to as many as seven twice in the second half, including following a three from Ray to make it a 43-36 margin with 17:10 left. Stonehill chipped away and took the lead at 48-47 after a jumper from Ashley Gendron, but the Hounds withstood a stretch of 5:45 without a field goal and the game remained even at 51-51 with 8:17 on the clock.
After a pair of free throws with 5:47 left from junior Caitlin Ackerman (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) tied the game at 59, Mary Louise Dixon knocked down a three to put the Skyhawks ahead to stay at 62-59. The Hounds battled to get with six over the final minute before dropping the back-and-forth 11-point final to the Skyhawks.
Ackerman led four Hounds in double figures with a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double. Ray added 15 points, along with 12 from O'Brien and 11 from senior Jamie Insel (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees).
Dixon led four Skyhawks in double figures with a game-high 21 points as they all came in the second half.
