Insel Leads Hounds to 73-50 Win Over FPU

Worcester, Mass. (December 1) -- A convincing 23-0 run to end the first half put Assumption in front by 19 at the break as the Hounds came away with an eventual 73-50 victory over visiting Franklin Pierce University on Sunday at Laska Gym. Assumption is receiving votes in this week's USA Today Division II National Poll for the third straight week.

Assumption jumped out to a 12-6 lead over the opening 4:39, capped by a free throw by senior Jamie Insel (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees). Over the next 5:27, Franklin Pierce embarked on a 10-0 run that resulted in a 16-12 lead at 10:16 after a three from Brittany Martelle. A three from the corner by Assumption freshman Allison Stoddard (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) ended the run and the Hounds eventually regained the lead on a layup from Insel to make it a 17-16 score.

In total, Assumption closed the first half on a 23-0 run behind nine first half points from Insel and an eight-point, eight-rebound period from freshman Johanna Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's). The Hounds shot 46.7 percent from the field in the period while holding the Ravens to 19.4 percent shooting as Franklin Pierce missed its final 12 shots of the half.

The Hounds opened the second half on a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 42-16 before a Pierce jumper from Caitlin Hopkins ended an overall 30-0 run by Assumption. Overall, the Hounds held the visitors off the scoreboard for 15:21 before the baseline basket from Hopkins.

Assumption held at least a 16-point lead over the remainder of the game as the Hounds picked up their first Northeast-10 victory of the season.

Insel led the Hounds with a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double, her fourth double-double of the season as her 20 points marked a career high. Senior Tafanie Roye (New Britain, Conn./Capital Prep Magnet) also finished in double figures with 15 points in the victory. Martelle was the lone Raven in double figures as she ended the game with 12 points.

Assumption improves to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in the Northeast-10, while Franklin Pierce falls to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, December 4th as the Hounds travel to nationally-ranked Stonehill for a 5:30 p.m. start at Merkert Gym.
