Colchester, Vt. (November 26) -- In a back-and-forth game on Tuesday night, the Assumption College women's basketball team dropped a 60-59 final to Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference play at the Ross Sports Center. Assumption is receiving votes in the USA Today Sports Division II National Poll for the third straight week.
Assumption jumped out to a seven-point lead over the opening 3:14 as a three off the fast break from senior Shannon Ray (Yonkers, N.Y./Ursuline Academy) made it an 11-4 margin, forcing a Purple Knights 30-second timeout. The Hounds led by as many as eight at 16-8 following a pair of free throws from freshman Johanna Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) with 11:52 left in the period. The Purple Knights cut the lead down to four on a three from Indira Evora with 7:52 left and cut it down to four again in the final minutes on another three from Alexa Long. The Hounds answered though as freshman Morgan O'Brien (Reading, Mass./Reading) drilled a three of her own to extend the lead back to 28-21. Long scored with just over a minute left in the first half on a spinning layup in the lane for the Purple Knights to cut the lead down to three as the Hounds took a 28-25 lead into the break.
The Purple Knights started the second half strong and surged out to their first lead since the opening minute on a jumper from Evora made it 36-34 with 14:56 left. Saint Michael's stretched the lead out to 41-38 with 12:53 remaining after an Evora three, forcing an Assumption 30-second timeout.
Assumption regained the lead with 9:34 left on a pair of free throws from Kelly Conley (Ellington, Conn./Ellington), but a three-point play from Long put the Purple Knights ahead by their biggest margin to that point at 49-45. Saint Michael's extended the lead to 52-46 on a corner three by Megan Gaudreau before Ray answered with a three of her own to cut it back to a one-possession game at the 6:16 mark.
After Kelly Frappier nailed a jumper to stake the Purple Knights to a 58-51 edge, back-to-back Impellizeri layups again cut the lead down to three at 58-55 with 3:25 remaining. The teams traded the lead twice more before Long put the hosts back in front at 60-59 as she was fouled on a layup with the score 60-59. After missing the free throw, the Hounds had a chance to regain the lead but came up empty before fouling Cara Deroy with 13.1 seconds left. Deroy missed the front end of a one-and-one as Jamie Insel (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees) pulled down the rebound as the Hounds eventually called timeout over midcourt with 9.1 on the clock. Assumption had a chance on a running layup in the final seconds, but that shot was off the mark as the Purple Knights pulled out the 60-59 win.
Insel finished the game with a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double, marking her third double-double of the season. Ray added 12 points as well to finish in double figures for the fifth time in six games. Impellizeri was solid as well as she posted a nine-point, seven-rebound showing. For the Purple Knights, Long had a team-best 16 while Evora added 15 and Makenzie Burud had 10.
With the loss, Assumption drops to 3-3 overall and 0-3 in the Northeast-10, while Saint Michael's improves to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Sunday, December 1st as the Hounds host Franklin Pierce University for a 1:30 p.m. start at Laska Gym.
