Worcester, Mass. (November 22) -- After sophomore Kelly Conley (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) hit a pair of free throws with no time on the clock to force overtime, the Assumption College women's basketball team came up short in a 68-65 overtime home loss to visiting Saint Anselm College on Saturday afternoon. Assumption is receiving votes in this week's USA Today Sports Division II National Poll.
In the first half, Saint Anselm was the one that jumped out on top as the Hawks held a 12-4 lead following a jumper from senior Tori Lehr with 11:41 left in the period. The Hawks continued to lead 26-18 with under four minutes left in the half before the Hounds closed on a 13-5 run to send the game into the locker room tied at 31-31. Capping the run was a layup from Conley as she finished the first half with 10 points.
Assumption took the lead early on in the second half and extended it to a 47-41 margin with 8:20 left in the period, forcing a Saint Anselm full timeout. The Hawks came roaring back though and eventually took a 51-50 lead following a layup from Lehr with 5:33 remaining.
Senior Shannon Ray (Yonkers, N.Y./Ursuline Academy) put the Hounds back in front with 4:11 left as she drilled a three from the corner in front of the Assumption bench for the 53-51 lead. The possession started on a defensive rebound by senior Tafanie Roye (New Britain, Conn./Capital Magnet Prep), who found Ray in the corner.
Allie Jones put Saint Anselm back in front 56-55 with 1:28 left and extended it to a 58-55 margin on a contested jumper by Lehr with 48.3 left, forcing an Assumption timeout. Roye knocked down a jumper to make it a one-point game and the Hawks regained possession with the shot clock off. With 16.5 seconds left though, Saint Anselm was called for an offensive foul to give the ball back to the Hounds. After an empty possession for Assumption, Jones was fouled with 4.9 seconds left and knocked down one of two free throws for a 59-57 lead. Conley got the rebound for Assumption and drove over half court before being fouled with no time left. She knocked down both free throw attempts however, sending the game into the extra period.
In overtime, Assumption jumped out to a 64-61 lead with 1:18 left on a cutting layup from Conley before Jones answered for the Hawks with a layup just 16 seconds later. After Conley hit one of two free throws with 52.4 seconds left for the 65-63 edge, Candace Andrews drilled a three from the top of the key to make it a 66-65 Saint Anselm lead with 24.1 left. Andrews later added a pair of free throws for a 68-65 lead, setting Assumption up for one last chance that was short and wide right at the buzzer.
Senior captain Jamie Insel (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees) led the Hounds with a 19-point, 17-rebound double-double, a career high in both points and rebounds. Conley added 15 points, along with 12 points from Ray. Lehr and Jones led Saint Anselm with 17 points each, while Lehr completed the double-double with 13 rebounds. Andrews also finished in double figures with 16 points.
With the loss, Assumption falls to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in Northeast-10 play, while Saint Anselm improves to 4-2 overall on the season and 1-2 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Tuesday, November 26th as the Hounds travel to Colchester, Vt. for a 5:30 p.m. clash with Saint Michael's College.
