Cambridge, Mass. (April 19) -- At the Sean Collier Invitational at MIT on Saturday, the Assumption College men's track and field team set the 4x100 meter relay school record and captured 11 top-10 individual finishes.
The 4x100 relay mark fell for the second straight week as the Hounds crossed in a time of 42.63 seconds to finish just .05 behind MIT, breaking the previous record by a .18-second margin. Sophomore Darnell Butler (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) earned two top-10 finishes of his own, including claiming victory in the 100 meters in a time of 10.92. He followed that with an eighth-place finish in the 200, crossing in 22.57.
Freshman Derek Field (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) placed eighth in the 400 meters in 51.72 seconds, while freshman Ian Flanagan (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) was 10th in the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:53.03. Freshman Andrew Churchill (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) finished seventh in the 110-meter hurdles at 16.25, while junior Alex Smith (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) placed ninth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:43.39.
In the field events, the Hounds were led by two fifth-place finishes from freshman Alex Cerbo (Cranston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) in the shot put and hammer throw. In the shot, he finished with a throw of 44 feet, 5.25 inches, along with a throw of 141 feet, 3.25 inches in the hammer. Two other Hounds placed in the top 10 in the hammer as sophomore Tim Jensen (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) finished sixth and freshman Danny Tyszka (Coventry, Conn./Coventry) placed ninth. Jensen posted a throw of 123 feet, 4.25 inches, while Tyszka threw a distance of 111 feet, 2.25 inches.
Freshman Jason Rice (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) picked up a ninth-place finish in the discus on Saturday, posting a top throw of 132 feet, 4.5 inches to round out the meet for the Hounds.
Assumption is back in action on Friday, April 24th as the Hounds travel to the Skyhawk Invitational, hosted by Stonehill College.
