WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption men's golf program looks to make a statement when it returns to the NCAA Division II Regional Championships for the first time since 2016, beginning play on Thursday, May 9 at the Totteridge Golf Club in Greensburg, Pa.
The Hounds finished the year ranked sixth in the East Region to secure the NCAA bid, a year after placing outside the top ten in the region. Assumption is one of four teams from the NE10 to be selected, along with No. 1 Franklin Pierce, No. 2 Southern New Hampshire and No. 3 Bentley. Though the team didn't reach the NCAA Regionals in 2018, senior James Elliott (Gill, Mass. / Pioneer Valley) was selected as an individual. Assumption last played in the NCAA Regionals in 2016, when the team was ranked 10th in the region. In 2016, they finished ninth among East Region teams led by Adam Borque's 34th place finish in the field of 108 golfers.
Overall 20 teams and eight individuals will participate in the Atlantic/East Regional at the Totteridge Golf Club in Greensburg, Pa. from May 9-11 and California (Pa.) will serve as the host school. At a minimum, the top three teams and top two student-athletes not from a team competing at the NCAA Regional will advance to the NCAA National Championships, May 20-24 in West Virginia.
This year Assumption has been led by sophomore Andrew Sanzaro (Wethersfield, Conn. / Wethersfield). He has been the team's top golfer this year and through 18 rounds of action has posted a stroke average of 74.8. It is the one of the best in the region and he has only had two rounds over 80 this year. Junior Mark Bryant (Hardwick, N.J. / North Warren Regional) has consistently been the team's second best golfer and ranks among the top 25 in the region. He has a stroke average of 75.7 and posted only two rounds over an 80 this year, while also shooting a 69 back in the fall.
Joining Bryant and Sanzaro and in its top-five at the Regionals this year are Elliott, Zach Magarian (Worcester, Mass. / West Boylston) and Lucas Roop (Gorham, Maine / Gorham). Elliot has a stroke average of 79.0 this year and one top-ten finish, at the Post Invitational when he tied for ninth with a 149. Magarian has a stroke average of 79.8 with a pair of top-15 finishes as he took 13th at the Bentley Newport Classics (77) and then tied for 12th at the NE10 Championships with a 148. Roop is the only freshman of the group and has been solid all year with a 76.6 stroke average. He shot a 3-under 69 at the AIC Invitational when he tied for third with a 146 and has three top-ten finishes this year.
