- The Lead: The Southern N.H. Penmen shut out the Assumption Greyhounds twice during Saturday's doubleheader, picking up two complete-game shutouts and a 3-0 win in game one and 5-0 win in game two.
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME ONE
-Penmen starter Wesley Tobin went the distance in game one, allowing only four hits and two walks (one intentional) while striking out 11 in his complete-game shutout. The Hounds' best shot at getting to Tobin came in the bottom of the seventh. Back-to-back singles allowed Trevor McQuade (Westwood, Mass. / Xaverian) to set up runners in scoring position with one out with his sac-bunt. The Penmen intentionally walked Dillon Koster (Woburn, Mass. / Woburn / Marist College) to set up a force at any base, but they wouldn't need it as Tobin struck out the next two batters to end the inning untouched.
-Southern N.H. then added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth. Marcus Chavez doubled in a run in with two outs in the top of the eighth. Kevin Alexy then hit one over the center field wall in the ninth to make it 3-0 Southern N.H.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-Brendan Desautels (Holden, Mass. / Holy Name Central Catholic) started for the Hounds and pitched well despite earning the loss. He allowed only one run (zero earned) over six innings of work while striking out five. He left the bases loaded in both the second and third inning and stranded 10 runners in all.
-R.J. Libby (Middleton, Mass. / Bishop Fenwick) led the Hounds at the plate with two hits. Three players for Southern N.H. had two hits each, while the Penmen combined for 11 in all.
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME TWO
-Endy Morales went the distance in game two, allowing only four hits and two walks while striking out nine. He did not allow a hit until the fourth inning on a single by Hunter Tralli (Berlin, Conn. / Northwest Catholic). All four hits were singles against Morales.
-Tom Blandini and Chavez had three hits each in game two for the Penmen, while Chavez knocked in two runs and scored twice and Blandini once each. Chavez put Southern N.H. on the board first in the third inning on a two-run double to right center. Blandini made it 4-0 in the fourth in an RBI-single and Chavez scored in the fifth to make it 5-0 Southern N.H.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-James McNamara (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) started for the Hounds and went five innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and one walk. He fell to 1-3 with the loss. Mike Keinz (North Branford, Conn. / Notre Dame) relieved McNamara and pitched the final four innings. He did not give up a hit but gave up only one walk and struck out six. Morales improved to 5-2 with the win.
-Tralli led the team with two hits in game two, going 2-for-4 at the plate.
