Manchester, N.H. (April 27) -- For the second straight day, the Assumption College baseball team defeated Saint Anselm College on Sunday afternoon in a 10-1 victory over the Hawks. The win gives the Hounds the three-game divisional series, with the final game to be contested on Monday afternoon in Manchester beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Assumption jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as junior Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass./Holy Name) launched his second homer of the season for the three-run shot. After senior Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) led off the game with a walk and stole second, sophomore Colin Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) singled to left to put two runners on with no outs. After two unearned runs made it 5-0 after two innings, Assumption increased the margin to 6-0 in the top of the third after an RBI single to left scored sophomore catcher Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc).
Paine's two-RBI double down the right field line highlighted a three-run seventh for Assumption, increasing the lead to 9-0 heading to the final two innings. Each team scored a single run in the eighth, en route to the 10-1 final as the Hounds outhit the Hawks by a 15-3 margin.
Sophomore pitcher Anthony Perry (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) went eight innings for the win, giving up just two hits with one run (none earned) while striking out four to improve to 2-3 overall. Figueroa was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead an Assumption offense that five players with multiple hits.
With the win, Assumption improves to 16-18 overall and 7-9 in divisional play with its third win in the last four games. Saint Anselm, which has now lost eight straight, falls to 12-31 overall and 4-15 in the division. Assumption picks up its eighth road win of the season with the victory, while Saint Anselm is 1-6 with the home field advantage.
The teams meet for the third time on Monday, April 28th in Manchester as the Hounds travel to Sullivan Park for a 3:30 p.m. start.
