Hounds Hold On For 8-6 Road Victory

Manchester, N.H. (April 26) -- On Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Park, the Assumption College baseball team held off a Saint Anselm College rally for an 8-6 victory over the Hawks in a Northeast-10 Conference divisional game. Game two at Sullivan Park was postponed due to unplayable field conditions.

After Assumption jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first behind an RBI sacrifice fly by junior Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass./Holy Name) that scored senior Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech). Figueroa, who would play a key role at the end of the game, reached on a double to left center to lead off the inning.

Assumption added to the lead with a six-run top of the third, posting six hits behind a two-RBI single to left center by freshman Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) while also taking advantage of two Saint Anselm errors for the convincing 7-0 edge heading to the fourth. Saint Anselm cut the lead to 7-2 heading to the sixth with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Hounds headed to the seventh with the 7-2 edge.

Saint Anselm closed the lead to 7-5 in the seventh behind a three-run homer to left center by senior Dan Lagasse and continued the offensive push to start the bottom of the eighth. After a one-out homer in the eighth off starter Cody Rocha (Fall River, Mass./B.M.C. Durfee), Figueroa came in from right to pitch for the remainder of the game and picked up his fifth save of the season as he threw 1.2 hitless innings.

Assumption added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI double to center to account for the 8-6 final.

Rocha picked up the win to improve to 4-2 after 7.1 innings pitched, while Figueroa earned his fifth save.

The teams will meet for a divisional game on Sunday at 3 p.m. in a neutral-site contest, which will be preceded by a Noon game featuring the Hounds vs. Rollins. Both of those games on Sunday will be played at Bentley University in Waltham, Mass.

The Hounds and Hawks will complete the divisional series with a road game at Saint Anselm on Monday afternoon to wrap up the three-game set. The non-conference game between the teams ended up being cancelled due to the weather conditions.
