Rindge, N.H. (April 17) -- Led by a complete-game effort from senior pitcher Bill King (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) on Thursday night, the Assumption College baseball team pulled away late for a 7-2 win over No. 26 ranked Franklin Pierce University at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field. The victory runs Assumption's winning streak to three straight, including a pair of wins over nationally-ranked teams.
Franklin Pierce took a 2-0 lead with single runs over the first two innings for the early advantage. Calvin Graves led off the game with a single and later scored on an RBI single to right center by right fielder John Razzino for the 1-0 lead. The Ravens extended the lead in the second as Kyle Hood's RBI single to left scored designated hitter Marty Dunlap, who reached on a leadoff single to left earlier in the frame.
The score stayed that way until the top of the fifth, when Assumption plated a pair of runs to tie the game at 2-2. Freshman shortstop Matt Murphy (Wakefield, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) earned a leadoff walk and stole second to get into scoring position before coming home on an RBI double down the left field line by senior Bret Clark (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central). Clark scored the tying run later in the inning on a sacrifice fly to right by senior Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech).
The Hounds took the 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh as Murphy led off the inning with another walk, stole second and advanced to third on a single by Clark. The single by Clark chased Ravens reliever Rob Corsi after one inning, bringing on Ryan Leach. After a line out to right, Clark tried to steal second and Murphy came home on the play for the one-run lead.
Assumption put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth as the Hounds put together three hits and three walks, while also taking advantage of one Franklin Pierce error in the four-run frame. Sophomore catcher Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc), who reached on a leadoff single in the inning, later scored on a passed ball for the 4-2 lead. Murphy scored his third run of the game for the 5-2 lead, followed by a two-RBI single thru the left side by freshman Jake Byrne (Grafton, Mass./Saint John's) to ice the game at 7-2 as junior Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass./Holy Name) and Figueroa came home on the play. King kept the Ravens silent in the ninth to preserve the win, including back-to-back strikeouts to wrap up the game.
King, who improved to 2-2 with the win, scattered 10 hits while allowed two runs with three walks and four strikeouts. Corsi took the loss in relief of starter Brendan O'Rourke, who lasted five innings before Corsi came in. Corsi drops to 2-2 with the loss.
Clark and Paine each had a pair of hits, while Figueroa and Byrne each registered two runs batted in. Graves had three hits in the leadoff spot for the Ravens, along with two hits by first baseman Matthew O'Herron.
Assumption is back in action on Friday, April 18th as the Hounds take on Saint Michael's College in a divisional doubleheader. That doubleheader will take place at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I. and will begin at Noon.
Assumption improves to 12-14 overall, while Franklin Pierce drops to 25-14 on the season.
