Worcester, Mass. (April 10) -- On Thursday afternoon at Rocheleau Field, the Assumption College baseball team dropped a 5-2 home final to visiting Franklin Pierce University in a Northeast-10 Conference divisional game.
The Ravens jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning with runs by Chris LaVorgna and Matthew O'Herron. O'Herron's RBI double to left opened the scoring as LaVorgna came home, followed by an RBI groundout by Justin Brock that scored O'Herron from third. Franklin Pierce added two more in the top of the fourth with an RBI single thru the left side by Kyle Hood and an RBI groundout by Brock.
Assumption got one back in the bottom of the sixth as junior Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) reached on a one-out walk, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a single to center by junior Kelvin Sims (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) for a 4-1 margin heading to the seventh.
O'Donnell scored his second run of the game in the eighth to make it a 4-2 game as he reached on a leadoff hit by pitch and scored on a two-out sacrifice fly by sophomore catcher Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc).
The Ravens added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, en route to the eventual 5-2 victory.
Rob Corsi went six innings for the Ravens to pick up the win, improving to 2-1 on the season. Corsi scattered six hits with one run to go along with three walks and five strikeouts. Assumption sophomore Anthony Perry (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) went the distance on the mound, dropping to 1-2 overall as he scattered 11 hits with five runs (four earned) and four strikeouts.
Sophomore Michael Panza (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) led the Hounds with two hits, while O'Donnell scored both runs for the hosts.
With the loss, Assumption drops to 9-11 overall and 5-7 in the Northeast-10, while Franklin Pierce improves to 23-11 overall and 10-4 in league play.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, April 12th as the Hounds travel to No. 11 ranked Southern New Hampshire University for a divisional doubleheader beginning at Noon.
