Providence, R.I. (June 10) -- Assumption College has finished sixth out of 15 institutions in the 2016 Northeast-10 Conference President's Cup standings, which were announced on Monday night in Providence, R.I. at the league's annual Awards Night ceremony at the Providence Hilton.
"I am proud of our student-athletes for all that they have accomplished during the 2015-2016 season," said Nick Smith, director of athletics. "At Assumption, our athletic programs continue to strive for excellence athletically, academically and in the community and I challenge each of our student-athletes to continue that pursuit of excellence in 2016-2017."
With 147.5 points overall, this is the second-highest total in program history and just 1.5 points shy of the 2014-2015 total that earned the Hounds a program-best third-place finish.
In 2015-2016, Assumption earned Northeast-10 Conference Championships in football and swimming and diving, along with a regular-season league title in field hockey for the first time in school history. Overall, seven teams reached the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament in 2015-16, including field hockey hosting the NE-10 Championship Game and women's soccer reaching the league semifinals for the second straight season. The football team earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth after winning the league championship game by a 17-14 final over New Haven, eventually advancing to the second round of the NCAA's.
The women's swimming and diving team claimed its third straight league championship by amassing almost nearly 800 points at the league meet, while the women's cross country team finished third overall and the women's outdoor track and field team posted its best finish in program history.
