Women’s Rowing Takes Third on Sunday

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption women's rowing Varsity 8 put forth a recording-breaking performance to place third on Lake Quinsigamond on Sunday morning.

The Hounds squared off against Clark, Connecticut College, Bowdoin and Johnson & Wales, placing third in the 2000-meter race with a time of 7:23.9. Racing in cold, choppy conditions, Bowdoin won in 7:10.0 while Conn. College took second in 7:21.3.

Assumption's 7:23.9 time set a new program record, eclipsing the old record of 7:28.2 set back in 1986 at the New England Rowing Championship. The record-setting boat lineup consisted of: coxswain Madison Doyle (Foxborough, Mass. / Foxborough), stroke Abby Boyko (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Our Lady of Lourdes), Kathryn Witherwax (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Our Lady of Lourde), Alexis Gibbons (Shirley, Mass. / St. Bernard's Central Catholic), MaryHope Gardner (Deep River, Conn. / Valley Regional High School), Karolina Dzieminski (Webster, Mass. / Bartlet), Michelle Byrnes (Oakdale, N.Y. / St. John the Baptist Diocesan), Madison Goodrow (Hopkinton, Mass. / Bancroft School) and Hannah Avard (Manchester, N.H. / Manchester West).

Head coach Aline Seekins was pleased with her team's performance. "The conditions made for a rough first home race although the girls handled it well and were still able to come across the line in third," said Seekins. "They went out and were able to set a new school record during the first 2000 meter race of the season and so I am very excited to see what the next six weeks have in store."

The Hounds are back in action on Saturday when they race on Lake Quinsigamond against Bryant, Johnson & Wales, Mass Maritime and Roger Williams.
