Hounds Fall 15-5 to No. 1 LIU Post

Worcester, Mass. (March 27) -- On Thursday afternoon, the Assumption College women's lacrosse team dropped a 15-5 final to No. 1 ranked LIU Post in non-conference action at the Multi-Sport Stadium.

The Hounds got on the board first just 3:05 into the opening half as freshman Quincy Wilkins (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug) scored on a free position shot for the early 1-0 edge. LIU Post got on the board just 29 seconds later as junior Jenna Pierro tallied her 10 goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. The Pioneers continued their offensive attack and jumped ahead 4-1, but the Hounds answered on a goal from senior Kathryn Beall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) to end the LIU Post run. Junior Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn./Amity) assisted on the goal for her eighth assist of the season, while the goal was the 12th of the year for Beall.

LIU Post answered on the 25th goal of the year from senior Jackie Sileo for a 5-2 lead and eventually extended that advantage out to 8-2 as senior Samantha Losco tallied a pair of goals in the 4-0 scoring run. Assumption closed the lead down to 8-3 with 7:40 left in the opening half on the second free position goal of the game by the Hounds as sophomore Kate Graydon (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) scored her sixth goal of the season. The Pioneers closed out the first-half scoring with 5:47 left in the period as Losco completed the first-half hat trick for the 9-3 margin at the break.

The Pioneers held a 15-5 edge in shots on goal in the first half, while ground balls were 15-8 in favor of the visitors. Both teams were efficient in clear attempts as LIU Post was a perfect 9-for-9, while Assumption was 7-for-11 in clear opportunities.

LIU Post began the second half on a 3-0 run to stretch the lead out to a nine-goal advantage midway thru with goals by Sileo, Pierro and a free position score from sophomore Alexis Newman. Assumption cut the lead down to 12-4 with 11:47 left in the game as McNeil took the ball from near midfield and sprinted to the net for her 18th goal of the season.  McNeil took the ball into the offensive zone and spun thru a group of Pioneer defenders before firing the shot past the LIU Post goalie.

The two teams traded goals over the next seven minutes, including the second goal of the game by Graydon as senior Lindsay Hagerman (Scarborough, Maine/Maine) assisted on the score. Sileo answered for the Pioneers, followed by a tally from senior Morgan Chiarenza for the 15-5 final margin with just over three minutes remaining.

Graydon led the Hounds with two goals, while McNeil registered one goal and one assist. Junior Allison Tivnan (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) led the team with five grounds to go along with one caused turnover.

Sileo, Pierro and Losco each had hat tricks for the Pioneers, who had eight different players score. Sileo also tallied a team-high five assists in the win.

The Pioneers held a 27-9 advantage in shots for the game and a 28-18 edge in ground balls. Draw controls were slightly in favor of LIU Post by a 13-9 margin, while Assumption was successful on 12-of-18 clear attempts. The Hounds converted 2-of-3 free position attempts and forced 18 LIU Post turnovers in the game.

Freshman goalie Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) made eight saves in the loss, while senior Katie Hannan had three stops to pick up the victory. Assumption senior Michelle Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) came in for the final 11:47 of the second half, making one save.

With the loss, Assumption drops to 5-3 overall, while LIU Post improves to 9-0 on the season.

Assumption is back in action on Saturday, March 29th as the Hounds travel to Saint Michael's for a 3:30 p.m. start in Colchester, Vt.
