Hounds Drop 19-11 Final at No. 9 Stonehill

Easton, Mass. (March 19) -- On Wednesday evening, the Assumption College women's lacrosse team had its four-game winning streak snapped as the Hounds dropped a 19-11 road final at No. 9 ranked Stonehill College in a Northeast-10 Conference game at W.B. Mason Stadium.

Stonehill jumped out to an early 2-0 edge behind two Elizabeth Vetter goals before Assumption junior Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn./Amity) answered with 26:25 left in the first to cut the lead in half at 2-1. The Skyhawks again went on a 2-0 run, including a man-up score by Lizzie Lance, that put the hosts in front 4-1 over the Hounds with 7:20 gone in the first half. Senior Kathryn Beall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) made it a 4-2 score with 21:13 left after a man-down goal, followed another goal by Beall with 12:22 remaining in the half to cut the lead to 5-4. After Cassandra McGill made it 6-4 on a free position shot, Stonehill's Kelsey Shannahan tallied three goals within a span of 1:23 to push in front at 9-4 with 10 minutes remaining in the opening half.

The Hounds used goals from junior Camille Auger (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) and freshman Quincy Wilkins (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug) to pull within a 10-6 margin with 2:21 on the clock, but Stonehill's Keri Gould tallied two goals within a 16-second span for the 12-6 halftime margin.

To open up the second half, the Skyhawks used a pair of man-up goals to key a 3-0 run as Stonehill led by a 15-6 margin with just over 19 minutes left in the period. Assumption answered with a pair of goals as Beall connected on a free-position attempt, followed by the second goal of the game by McNeil to cut the lead to 15-8 with 13:49 remaining.

Stonehill outscored the Hounds by a 4-3 margin over the final 12 minutes to pull away for the victory. Sophomore Kate Graydon (Kennbunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) had a pair of goals for the Hounds over the final stretch, including a man-up goal off an assist from McNeil with 4:50 remaining in the game.

Beall finished with three goals for the Hounds, along with two goals and one assist from McNeil and two goals each from Graydon and Wilkins. For Stonehill, Shannahan led the offense with a five-goal showing. Beall led the way in draw controls with five, along with four for Auger as each also had two caused turnovers.

In net for the Hounds, freshman Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) had eight saves in the defeat to fall to 4-1, while Ashley Armstrong turned aside 10 shots to even her record at 2-2 on the season for Stonehill.

As a team, Assumption was outshot by a slight 27-21 margin in shots on goal and trailed Stonehill by a 20-15 total in ground balls for the game. The Hounds won 14 draw controls in the game while successfully converting 7-of-12 clear attempts and forcing 11 Stonehill turnovers.

With the loss, Assumption falls to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in Northeast-10 play, while Stonehill improves to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Saturday, March 22nd as the Hounds host Southern New Hampshire University for a 3 p.m. start at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
