Hounds Pull Away For Fourth Straight Win
Worcester, Mass. (March 15) -- For the second straight season, the Assumption College women's lacrosse team has opened with a 4-0 record as the Hounds defeated visiting American International by a 17-8 final on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference play.
The Yellow Jackets got on the board 21 seconds into the game as sophomore Riley Brennan scored her 13th goal of the season for a 1-0 lead. Assumption answered right back though just 3:06 into the game on the eighth goal of the year from junior Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn./Amity). Freshman Tori Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) scored the first of her three goals on the day to put the Hounds up 2-1 and the teams traded goals over the next four minutes.
Senior Lindsay Hagerman (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) tallied her team-best 11th goal of the year with 11:17 left in the opening period, with the assist coming from freshman Quincy Wilkins (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug) for her first collegiate point. Senior Brittany Flynn answered to pull the Jackets to within one at 5-4, but Assumption answered with nine unanswered goals over a stretch of nearly 22 minutes to lead by double digits at 14-4 with 15:48 left in the second half. In the run, the Hounds received two goals each from McNeil, Hagerman and sophomore Kate Graydon (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk).
Wilkins tallied her first career goal off a free position shot with 6:29 left in the opening half and added two more assists to open the second to help key the run as well. Assumption led by at least eight over the final 14 minutes of play as three Hounds found the back of the net in the second half. For the Yellow Jackets, Brennan posted three goals in the second half alone, en route to a team-leading four goals on the day.
Hagerman led the Hounds with a six-point effort on four goals and two assists, followed by McNeil with four goals. Russo added three goals and one assist for her first career hat trick, while Wilkins finished with one goal and a team-high three assists. Russo also led the Hounds with three ground balls as five Assumption players had multiple ground balls. Wilkins, along with senior Kathryn Beall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury), converted the two free-position goals for the Hounds.
Brennan led AIC scorers with four goals, along with two goals from Flynn and two assists from junior Whitney McKay.
Freshman Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) made seven saves for the Hounds to improve to 4-0 on the season, while AIC sophomore Lissy Doherty made 10 stops in the defeat.
Overall, the Hounds held a 41-23 advantage in total shots and forced 25 Yellow Jacket turnovers for the game. Assumption held a slight 20-16 edge in ground balls and was successful in 16-of-22 clear attempts. The Yellow Jackets held an 18-9 advantage in draw controls, including 12-4 in the first half.
Both teams finished the game 2-for-7 in free-position attempts, with all four free-position scores coming in the first half.
With the win, the Hounds improve to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast-10, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, March 19th as the Hounds travel to Stonehill for a 7 p.m. start at W.B. Mason Stadium.
