Rockville Centre, N.Y. (March 7) -- For the first time in six all-time meetings, the Assumption College women's lacrosse team defeated Molloy College by an 11-6 final in non-conference action at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex on Friday night. This marks the second straight season that the Hounds have started with a 2-0 overall record.
Assumption got on the board just 2:22 into the game as junior Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn./Amity) converted a free-position attempt for her third goal of the season and 125th of her career to put the Hounds up 1-0. After Samantha Artlotta tied the game for Molloy just 2:22 later, senior Lindsay Hagerman (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) tallied the first of her three goals in the game to put Assumption in front 2-1 with 22:09 left for her sixth goal of the year.
Molloy's Chelsea Bauer tied the game at 2-2 midway thru the period before Hagerman took advantage of an Arlotta turnover and put the Hounds up 3-2 on her seventh goal of the season. She added to the lead with just 28 seconds left in the half off an assist by junior Camille Auger (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) for a 4-2 lead at the break.
In the first, Katie O'Brien converted a Molloy free-position chance just 1:19 in, followed by a goal by Casey Naab to tie the game at 4-4 just 1:54 into the second. Naab converted the goal after a turnover as she was assisted by O'Brien on the score.
In the second, the teams saw six combined goals over the opening 10 minutes of the half as the two teams entered the final 20 minutes of play tied at 6-6. Auger scored twice to put the Hounds in front at 6-5 off an assist from Hagerman before Jessica Teves took advantage of an Assumption turnover and tied the game at 6-6 with 20:21 remaining. Assumption took the lead for good with 19:45 left as sophomore Julianna Molloy (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) notched her third goal of the season off an assist from Hagerman for the 7-6 edge.
Molloy called a timeout with 10:08 remaining, but it was Assumption that came out strong after the break as freshman Tori Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) scored her first career goal for the 8-6 edge at the 7:36 mark. Sophomore Molly Brown (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) added to the lead just 32 seconds later on a free-position goal, her second score of the year. Sophomore Tess Anketell (Southborough, Mass./Marian) put the Hounds into double digits with just 3:14 left, scoring her third goal of the year off a team-best fifth assist from Auger that forced a Molloy timeout.
McNeil found the back of the net with 1:32 remaining in the game, her fourth goal of the season, as the Hounds the Lions scoreless over the last 20 minutes of play in the five-goal road victory.
Hagerman finished the game with five points on three goals and two assists, along with two goals and two assists for Auger and two from McNeil. Assumption held a 28-25 edge in shots and was 13-for-17 in clear attempts. The Hounds defense held the Lions to just a 6-for-12 showing in clear attempts.
Freshman Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) had eight saves in the victory for the Hounds to improve to 2-0, while sophomore Caroline Winters have 10 stops for the Lions in the loss.
With the win, Assumption improves to 2-0 overall, while Molloy falls to 1-2 overall and is now 0-2 against Northeast-10 competition this season.
Assumption is back in action on Thursday, March 13th as the Hounds travel to Merrimack College for a 4 p.m. start in Northeast-10 play in North Andover, Mass.
