McNeil Scores 100th Goal in 14-13 Victory

Worcester, Mass. (March 30) -- Sophomore attack Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn/Amity) became the fourth player in school history with 100 career goals as the Assumption College women's lacrosse team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 14-13 home win over Saint Michael's on Saturday afternoon.

Assumption jumped on the board first as senior Michelle Santos (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) scored her 17th goal of the season for the 1-0 lead. Santos stretched the lead out to 2-0 just over six minutes later before the Purple Knight offense came to life. Saint Michael's got on the board on a man-up goal from sophomore Melissa Jackiewicz with 15:52 left, followed by a free-position goal from Kate Boyer just 14 seconds later. After Shannon Murphy put the visitors in front with her seventh goal of the year, the Hounds put an end to the Saint Michael's run as McNeil notched her league-leading 43rd goal of the season to tie the game at 3-3 with 12:23 left in the period.

The Purple Knights regained the momentum though as Boyer and Crystal King scored to put Saint Michael's in front at 5-3. Senior Steph O'Rourke (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) pulled the Hounds within one on a free-position goal with 8:03 left and tied the game just 1:03 later on an unassisted tally. Neither team was able to find the net over the final seven minutes of the half as the two goalies combined for 16 saves over the first 30 minutes.

In a high-scoring second half that featured 17 combined goals, the Hounds got things started on a free-position goal from junior Lindsay Hagerman (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) to regain the lead at 6-5 with 23:55 remaining. After the Purple Knights tied the game at 6-6 on the second goal of the game from Crystal King, McNeil scored the 100th goal of her career off an assist from sophomore Camille Auger (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk).

With the game tied at 8-8 with 17:34 remaining, the Hounds put together a three-goal run to take their biggest lead to that point at 11-8. Saint Michael's cut the lead back down to one moments later, but the Hounds used goals from Santos, Auger and McNeil to eventually make it a 14-11 margin with just 3:47 left. The Purple Knights made things interesting on a goal from Boyer with 3:01 left, followed by a free-position score from King with just 1:19 remaining. O'Rourke won the ensuing draw control following the goal though as the Hounds were able to kill off the remaining time for the one-goal victory.

Assumption controlled the draw as the Hounds held a 17-12 advantage in draw controls, including four from junior Kathryn Beall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury). Ground balls were even at 20 apiece for each team as 12 different Hounds picked up at least one ground ball. Both teams were efficient in clear attempts as well as there were just five unsuccessful clears in 33 combined attempts.

Assumption was led by hat tricks from McNeil, Santos and Auger, along with a pair of goals from O'Rourke. McNeil added an assist, along with a pair of assists from Auger. King was the offensive leader for the Purple Knights as she registered a seven-point outing with five goals and two assists. Boyer also added a hat trick, along with two goals from Hannah Beardsley.

Junior Michelle Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) made 12 saves to pick up the win, while Saint Michael's goalie Casey Curtin turned aside eight shots in the loss.

Assumption improves to 6-4 overall and 3-3 in the Northeast-10, while Saint Michael's falls to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, April 3rd as the Hounds travel to Southern Connecticut for a 7 p.m. start at Jess Dow Field.
