Worcester, Mass. (March 17) -- The Assumption women's lacrosse team defeated Saint Thomas Aquinas, 15-9, in the home opener at the Multi-Sport Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
After a 6-6 first half, Assumption outscored Saint Thomas Aquinas 9-3 in the second half. Offensively, Assumption was led by a five-goal effort by freshman Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn./Amity). Lindsay Hagerman (Scarborough, Maine) added a team-high three assists for the Greyhounds.
Junior Michelle Santos (Holliston, Mass./Holliston), Steph O'Rourke (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) and Camille Auger (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) each added two goals, while senior Danielle D'Amico (Johnston, R.I./LaSalle Academy) and Kathryn Beall (Shrewbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) each had one.
Assumption jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by McNeil and Beall in the first two minutes of the game, and led by two with four minutes to play in the half. Saint Thomas scored the final two goals heading into the break, to tie the score at six.
The team traded goals for the first 10 minutes of the second half, but Assumption closed the game on a six-goal run to pick up the victory.
Goaltender Michelle Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) made nine saves in the victory while Assumption improves to 1-3 on the season with the victory. Saint Thomas Aquinas falls to .500 at 2-2 overall.
The Greyhounds return to play on Wednesday, March 21st, when the team travels to New Haven to take on the Chargers. The game will begin at 4:00 p.m in New Haven, Conn.
