Hounds Knocked Out By Pace in 60-50 Road Final
Pleasantville, N.Y. (February 26) -- In the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament Quarterfinals, the No. 6 seeded Assumption women's basketball team fell by a 60-50 final to No. 3 seed Pace on Sunday afternoon at the Goldstein Center. Assumption, which is receiving votes in this week's USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 National Poll, falls to 17-10 overall with the defeat.
The Setters jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead before the Hounds got on the board on a layup by Jamie Insel (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees) with 15:57 left in the first half. Assumption put together a 12-3 run in all, capped by a three-pointer from Lindsey Roche (Arlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic), to take the lead at 12-11 with 11:40 on the clock.
With the game sitting at 25-23 Pace with 3:43, the Setters answered with a 9-0 run over the next 2:58 to extend the lead out to 34-23 with just 45 seconds left. The Hounds closed the half on a layup basket by senior All-American candidate Kelly Meredith (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) with 25 seconds left as Assumption trailed by a 34-25 margin at the halftime break.
After the two teams traded baskets to open the second half, the Setters embarked on a 9-0 run over 3:50 and blew the game open at 45-27 with 14:09 left in the period. Pace led by as many as 20 points at 55-35 with 8:45 left before the Hounds put together an 11-1 run to make it a 56-46 margin with 2:31 left following a three from Gabrielle Gibson (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague). That was as close as the Hounds would get though as the Setters won by a 10-point margin at 60-50.
Meredith finished the game with 14 points to surpass the 1,600-point plateau, finishing the game with 1,612 career points. Gibson also added 12 points, along with 10 from Insel.
