Hounds Improve to 17-6 With 85-70 Win at Adelphi

Garden City, N.Y. (February 11) -- Led by 23 points from junior Gabrielle Gibson (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) and 21 points from senior All-American candidate Kelly Meredith (Franklin, Mass./Franklin), Assumption pulled away for an 85-70 road win at Adelphi on Saturday afternoon. Assumption is receiving votes in this week's USA Today/ESPN Division II National Top 25 Poll.

Neither team led by more than three points over the first 10 minutes of the game as Adelphi held a 24-22 edge with 9:18 on the clock. Assumption answered with a 10-0 run over the next 2:38 behind four points from Meredith. The Panthers chipped away to close back to within three at 36-33 before the Hounds ended the half on a 9-2 run to take a 10-point lead into the halftime break. Meredith led all scorers with 17 points in the half, including 5-of-6 from the free throw line.

Adelphi climbed to within five at 51-46 early in the second before the Hounds offense answered and expanded the lead up to 18 at 70-52 following a three from Marissa Velez (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) with 10:29 left. Adelphi made it a 10-point with 3:55 remaining, but that was as close as the Panthers would get as the Hounds ran their winning streak to three games.

Meredith finished the game with 21 points to move into second place on the Assumption all-time career scoring list with 1,544 points as she now trails only Stacy Mattioli '01, who is the all-time leader at 1,791 career points. Gibson led the Hounds with 23 points on 9-for-12 shooting, along with a 17-point, eight-assist showing from junior Katy Howard (Medway, Mass./Medway).

Jessica Kitrys led the Panthers with 23 points, along with 18 points from Sade Jackson and 11 from Amanda Campusano. The Hounds held the Panthers to just two points off the bench in the victory.

Assumption improves to 17-6 overall, 14-5 in Northeast-10 play and remains in a tie for third place with Pace in the Northeast-10 standings. Adelphi falls to 8-15 overall and 6-13 in league action.

Assumption is back in action on Tuesday, February 14 as the Hounds travel to Albany, N.Y. to take on the College of Saint Rose for a 5:30 p.m. start.
