Hounds Fall in Exhibition at Division I Connecticut by 89-30 Final

Storrs, Conn. (November 3) -- In the season-opening exhibition game at Gampel Pavilion on Thursday night, the Assumption women's basketball team dropped an 89-30 final to the University of Connecticut. UConn is a Division I member of the BIG EAST Conference.

After a number of turnovers by both teams to start the game, the Hounds took their first lead on a three-pointer from the corner by Lindsey Roche (Arlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) for the 3-2 edge. After the Huskies regained the advantage, the Hounds got back within one at 10-9 with 14:28 left in the first half on a jumper from junior Gabrielle Gibson (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague). A 13-4 UConn run pushed the lead up to 22-13 midway thru the half before Gibson knocked down a three from the left side to get Assumption back within six at 22-16 with 9:23 left. UConn clamped down on defense over the remainder of the half though, closing the period on a 34-3 run that included four three-pointers by freshman Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, the BIG East Preseason Freshman of the Year. Gibson led the Hounds with five first-half points, while Tiffany Hayes led the Huskies with 15 in the half as UConn led 56-19 at the break.

The Huskies opened the second half on a 12-0 run over the first 3:04 to stretch the lead to 68-19 before a layup by Gibson got the Hounds on the board in the period. The Hounds fought down the stretch before falling to the Huskies by the 59-point final margin.

Gibson led the Hounds with 10 points, while Hayes led the Huskies with 18 points and 10 assists as five players finished in double figures.

The Hounds are back in action on Sunday, November 6th as the team travels across Worcester to take on Holy Cross in their final exhibition game of the season. That game is a 1 p.m. tipoff at the Hart Center. Assumption opens the regular season on Wednesday, November 16th as the Hounds host American International for a 5:30 p.m. start at Laska Gym.
