Softball Ends Season With 3-0 NCAA Loss
New Haven, Conn. (May 5) -- On day two of the NCAA East Regional, the Assumption softball season came to an end as the Hounds fell by a 3-0 final to Caldwell College in a game played at DeWitt Family Field at Yale University. The Hounds were making their first NCAA appearance since the 2000 season after winning the 2012 Northeast-10 Conference Tournament title.
Caldwell got on the board in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly to deep that was tracked down by center fielder Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H/Manchester Central) as she crashed into the fence to make the catch. Dia Cascone led off the inning with a double to right, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and came home on the sacrifice fly.
The Hounds threatened in the top of the third, capitalizing on a pair of walks and a wild pitch to get two runners into scoring position before Caldwell ended the threat with a fly out to right.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars added a second run as Kristen Knorr led off with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on an illegal pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Alyssa Calderon.
Caldwell added their final run in the bottom of the sixth as Briana Gaspich's RBI single to right center scored Katie Margiotta to make it a 3-0 margin.
In the top of the seventh, senior Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) led off with a walk, followed by a single up the middle by freshman Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy) to put two on with no outs. With two outs, Robidoux drew a walk to load the bases before Caldwell worked out of the jam though to close out the shutout victory.
Senior pitcher Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) went the distance for the Hounds, giving up just three hits with four strikeouts and one walk as she ended the season at 18-10 overall. Lowrey finishes her Assumption career with a program-record 705 strikeouts. Hanna Walkinshaw went the distance for the Cougars in the victory as Caldwell advances to take on UMass Lowell in an elimination game.
Assumption wraps up the season at 33-18 overall, the team's fifth 30-win season and third NCAA appearance under head coach Ralph DeLucia.
