North Andover, Mass. (April 20) -- Led by a seven home run outing, the Assumption College softball team clinched a quarterfinal home game in the Northeast-10 Tournament with a sweep of Merrimack on Friday afternoon. The Hounds rolled in game one by an 11-1 final before earning a 10-0 shutout in game two to complete the sweep. Assumption can now finish no worse than third in the regular season standings entering the final doubleheader on Saturday.
The Hounds are currently ranked No. 9 in the NCAA East Region Poll, which was released earlier this week. It marks the first time the team has been regionally-ranked this season.
In game one, Assumption was led by a three-home run effort by junior second baseman Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) and a three-hit, 13-strikeout effort from senior pitcher Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet). The Hounds got things going in the first on a three-run homer from Medeiros, along with an RBI single thru the left side by freshman Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy) for the 4-0 lead. After a second-inning homer by sophomore Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) made it 5-0, Medeiros added a two-run shot in the fourth a solo homer in the sixth to extend the advantage. In the sixth, freshman Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name), the Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week, added a two-run shot to center to complete the scoring for Assumption.
Medeiros ended game one 3-for-4 with three runs scored and five runs batted in.
Lowrey scattered just three hits with 13 strikeouts and zero walks as she improves to a team-best 14-6 on the season. Kelli Jo Deardorff falls to 10-9 on the season with the loss for the Warriors.
In game two, sophomore Jenn Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) took the ball for the Hounds and went five innings, giving up just three hits with no runs, five strikeouts and no walks to improve to 8-3 overall.
A five-hit, three-run first got the Hounds off on the right foot, followed by two runs each in the second and third. Striking in the second with her second homer of the day was Robidoux, who launched a two-run shot to left for the 5-0 lead. The third inning was also keyed by a home run as senior Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) led off the inning with a homer and ended the game hitting over the .300 mark on the season at .304.
Assumption added three runs in the fourth on just two hits and one error to complete the victory and pick up the sweep of the Warriors. Robidoux, Palumbo and freshman Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass./Ursuline Academy) each had two hits to lead the Assumption offense in game two. Alie Thomas took the loss for Merrimack, pitching just two innings to fall to 6-11.
The Hounds improve to 28-13 overall with the sweep and 21-7 in Northeast-10 play, while Merrimack falls to 17-23 overall and 11-17 in the league.
Assumption closes out the regular season on Saturday afternoon, traveling to UMass Lowell for a doubleheader beginning at Noon.
