Worcester, Mass. (April 12) -- After a 3-0 shutout win over Saint Anselm in game one, the Assumption College softball team completed the sweep with of the Hawks with an 11-5 victory in game two to remain in second place in the Northeast-10 Conference standings. In game two, the Hounds pounded out 16 hits and took advantage of six Saint Anselm errors for the win.
In game one, the Hounds used a dominating three-hit shutout from senior Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) to open up the twinbill with the win. She also struck out 14 of the 27 batters she faced, posting her eighth double-digit strikeout game of the season and tying her season high.
Assumption got on the board in the fourth on an RBI double from Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) that scored freshman Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name). The Hounds added a second run just moments later as Palumbo scored on a wild pitch for the 2-0 lead. Palumbo scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth on a fielding error by Saint Anselm to account for the 3-0 final. Freshman catcher Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass./Ursuline Academy) led the offense with a 2-for-3 showing in the game.
With the win, Lowrey improves to 10-5 on the season, while Tayla Trask took the loss for the Hawks to fall to 5-4 overall.
In the second game, Saint Anselm got on the board in the top of the first as Nicole Boucher scored on a sacrifice fly from Lauren Galavotti for the 1-0 lead. Assumption answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning behind three hits and two Saint Anselm errors. The big inning for Assumption came in the top of the second as the Hounds, led by a two-RBI double to right from Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk), batted around the order for a five-run inning. Assumption had six hits in the inning, including a triple from DiPilato, and took advantage of a Saint Anselm error as well.
Saint Anselm answered back in the top of the fifth with four runs of its own, led by a two-RBI single from Kat Scafidi, to pull back within 10-5. Assumption added a single run in the top of the fifth though to make it an 11-5 final though as the Hounds rebounded from a pair of losses on Wednesday afternoon to No. 18 Southern Connecticut.
Senior pitcher Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem) allowed just two hits and one earned run with six strikeouts and no walks in six innings to improve to 5-2 on the season. Alexis Bogdanovich lasted just 1.1 innings for the Hawks, giving up five runs on five hits to fall to 5-9.
Medieros, along with sophomores Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) and Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner), all finished with three hits in game two. Palumbo, along with junior Melissa Jalbert (Gardner, Mass./Gardner), each posted two hits as well.
With the sweep, the Hounds have now won eight of their last 10 in league play to improve to 22-11 overall and 15-5 in Northeast-10 play. Saint Anselm falls to 14-20 overall and 8-10 in league action with the pair of defeats.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, April 14 as the Hounds host Stonehill College for a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader beginning at Noon at Marois Field.
