Softball Sweeps N.Y.I.T. As Napolitano and Stazinski Toss Shutouts, 8-0, 4-0April 9, 2006
WORCESTER, Mass. --- Assumption College rode the brilliant pitching of senior righthander SHALYNN NAPOLITANO (Lawrence, MA/Fellowship Christian) and junior righthander CAITLIN STAZINSKI (PICTURED TO THE RIGHT) (Westboro, MA/Westboro) while sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from New York Institute of Technology SUNDAY at Marois Field. In the opener Napolitano pitched a two-hitter, fanned five and used just 52 pitches as the Greyhounds won 8-0 in a game stopped in the home half of the fifth inning with the college softball mercy rule (eight-run lead). In the second game Stazinski also pitched a two-hitter, fanning two and using just 84 pitches in a equally impressive 4-0 win. In game one, the Greyhounds scored six times in the third inning with sophomore catcher KORINA SALAFIA (Leominster, MA/Leominster) providing the big hit of the inning with a three-run triple to rightcenter field. An RBI single by freshman first baseman LIZ MUCICA (Tewksbury, MA/Tewksbury), a wild pitch and an error accounted for the other runs. Mucica walked with the bases loaded in the fifth inning to make it 8-0 and end the game. Sophomore shortstop AMANDA MONGE (Reading, MA/Central Catholic) added a single and double to the attack. In game two, the Greyhounds scored a run in the first inning on a error, a stolen base and two wild pitches and scored a second run in the third inning on a Mucica RBI single. They plated two insurance runs in the fourth inning with Salafia accounting for one with an infield RBI single, while the final run came home on an overthrow. Sophomore leftfielder LAUREN SYMONICK (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) had three hits to pace the eight-hit second-game attack. The Greyhounds, now 15-12 overall, host Southern Connecticut State WEDNESDAY at 4 p.m. in a single make-up game. The first game of the doubleheader was won by the Hounds (1-0) on April 1.
