Hounds Fall Short in 11-7 Final at Pace

Pleasantville, N.Y. (April 16) -- On Wednesday afternoon in the final road game of the season, the Assumption College men's lacrosse team dropped an 11-7 final at Pace University in a Northeast-10 Conference contest at Pace Field. The contest marked the final contest at Pace Field, which will be replaced by an artificial turf surface for the 2015 season.

The first half of the game was the tale of two runs as the Setters started out with a 4-0 lead thru the opening four minutes of the second quarter, led by two goals from Matthew Cossidente. Senior Ian Mack (Avon, Conn./Avon) got the Hounds on the board with 6:55 left in the second quarter to cut the lead to 4-1, followed by two goals in a six-second stretch later in the period for the 4-3 halftime margin. Junior Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) scored with 2:51 on the clock for his team-leading 39th goal of the season, with the assist to sophomore Nick Guarino (Avon, Conn./Avon) following the faceoff win.

Pace extended the lead out to 9-4 after three quarters behind two goals each by Cossidente and Adam Mirkin in the third that were sandwiched between an even-strength score by sophomore Connor Munisteri (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville). In the fourth, Smith tallied twice and Munisteri once before the Hounds came up short by the 11-7 final as Assumption held a slight 3-2 edge over the final quarter of play.

Smith led the Hounds with three goals, while Scoscia and Cossidente each had four goals for the Setters. Guarino won 14 faceoffs in the game while leading the team with eight ground balls as well.

Junior Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) had 13 saves in the loss, while Timothy Izzo made 15 stops for the victory.

For the game, the Hounds held a 33-28 edge in ground balls, while Pace outshot Assumption by a slim 36-31 margin overall. Assumption won 14-of-22 faceoffs and converted 16-of-17 clear attempts, including a perfect 8-for-8 in the second half. Neither team was able to convert a man-up goal as each team was 0-for-3 on the extra-man scoring chances.

With the loss, Assumption falls to 5-8 overall and 3-7 in the league, while the Setters improve to 3-7 overall and 2-7 in the Northeast-10. Assumption is back in action on April 26th as the Hounds host Merrimack for a Senior Day contest beginning at 7 p.m.
