Hounds Drop 11-5 Final to No. 1 Adelphi

Worcester, Mass. (April 8) -- On Tuesday night at the Multi-Sport Stadium, the Assumption College men's lacrosse team dropped an 11-5 final to No. 1 ranked Adelphi University in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup. The Hounds trailed just 5-2 at the halftime break before the Panthers used a five-goal third quarter to pull away for the win.

Adelphi jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one quarter, including the team-high 32nd goal of the season by graduate student Nick Watson as he scored with the man advantage with 4:37 left in the opening period. Junior Peter Gersbeck (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) got the Hounds on the board just 1:10 into the second quarter with an unassisted tally and the 3-1 margin. The Panthers answered with two goals to stretch the lead back to 5-1, but Hounds junior Tim Casey (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) closed out the first-half scoring with 1:30 left on his seventh goal of the season and the 5-2 margin at the break.

The Panthers asserted control of the game in the third quarter with an 18-4 edge in shots that Adelphi converted into five goals. Watson completed the hat trick with 4:49 left in the third off an assist from Salvatore Tuttle, en route to a team-high four goals to lead a balanced attack.

Trailing 10-3 heading into the final quarter, Assumption outscored Adelphi by a 2-1 margin in the fourth period as juniors Paul Curran (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) scored even-strength goals to account for the 11-5 final.

Curran posted one goal and one assist to lead the Hounds, while Watson had four goals and Tuttle posted three assists to lead Adelphi.

In net, junior Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) made 15 saves in the loss, while Aidan Bennardo got the start and had five saves in just over 48 minutes of play for the Panthers.

Adelphi held a 48-34 overall advantage in shots, including 26-19 in shots on goal. The Hounds had a slight 31-30 advantage in ground balls, including 15-5 in the fourth quarter. Adelphi held a 13-7 advantage in faceoffs won and converted 19-of-22 clear chances, while Assumption was successful on 18-of-21 clear opportunities. The Panthers converted three man-up chances as well, while Assumption was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.

Assumption, ranked fifth in this week's New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Division II Poll, falls to 5-6 overall and 3-5 in the Northeast-10 with the loss. Adelphi remains the lone unbeaten in the league as the Panthers improve to 11-0 overall and 8-0 in league play.

The Hounds are back in action on Saturday, April 12th as the team travels to Bentley University for a 1 p.m. start in Waltham.
