Smith Leads Hounds Past Dominican, 17-5
Hillburn, N.Y. (March 11) -- Led by a career-high seven-goal outburst from junior attack Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa), the Assumption College men's lacrosse team won its second straight game with a 17-5 road victory over Dominican College on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Chargers took an early 1-0 lead just 2:24 into the game as Nicholas Capano tallied his first goal of the season. Assumption answered with five goals in the first quarter, including two by Smith as the Hounds held a 5-2 lead after the opening period. Junior John Greco (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) started off the second quarter with his first goal of the season and the Hounds built to an 8-2 advantage with 8:48 on the clock following the fifth goal of the season by junior Paul Curran (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River). The goal was the fifth in the last two games for Curran as he eventually posted his second-straight hat trick.
Dominican went on a 3-1 run between the end of the second quarter and start of the third and cut the lead down to 9-5 with 12:36 left in the third period after an even-strength goal from Tanner Olsen. The goal was the third of the season by Olsen and was assisted on by Theodore Wright. Assumption held a 9-4 lead at the half after outshooting the Chargers by a 24-7 margin over the first two quarters.
Assumption closed the game on an 8-0 run that included four goals from Smith as the Hounds pulled away for the 17-5 win. Smith had three man-up scores and a man-down goal with 6:59 left in the third quarter that was assisted on by senior captain Ian Mack (Avon, Conn./Avon).
Smith posted an eight-point day as he added an assist to his career-best seven-goal outing. Curran posted his second-straight hat trick to go along with two assists, while junior Tim Casey (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) had one goal and a team-best three assists. Overall, seven Hounds posted goals in the game and eight had assists in the victory.
For the Chargers, Olsen had two goals to lead the offense, along with two assists by Wright.
In goal, junior Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) and freshman Matt Comerford (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) each played 30 minutes as Contento earned his second win. Contento had zero saves in the first half, while Comerford turned aside three shots in the final two quarters. For Dominican, Matthew Quinones had 22 stops as he faced 39 shots on goal.
Sophomore faceoff specialist Nick Guarino (Avon, Conn./Avon) was spectacular yet again with an 18-for-22 outing as he has now won 48-of-77 faceoffs on the season and 32-of-46 over the last two wins.
Overall, the Hounds held a 47-25 edge in shots and a 51-26 advantage in ground balls in the 12-goal win. Assumption won 19-of-24 faceoffs in the non-conference contest, was successful in 15-of-16 clear attempts and converted 3-of-9 man-up chances. Assumption also forced 19 Dominican turnovers, as opposed to just 10 turnovers by the Hounds.
With the win, Assumption is now even at 2-2 overall, while Dominican falls to 0-2 on the season.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, March 15th as the Hounds host Southern New Hampshire University for a 3 p.m. start at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
