Hounds Roll to 15-8 Home Win Over Post

Worcester, Mass. (March 8) -- On Saturday afternoon at the Multi-Sport Stadium, the Assumption College men's lacrosse team picked up a 15-8 victory over visiting Post University in the first-ever meeting between the two teams. The Eagles are in their first season as an NCAA Division II varsity program.

Assumption started off on a 7-0 run that spanned between the first and second quarters and included three goals in a span of just 49 seconds. Junior Paul Curran (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) scored off a rebound with 6:59 left in the first for the 1-0 lead, followed by another goal just seven seconds later. On the ensuing faceoff after Curran's goal, junior Ty Martina (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) picked up the ground ball and passed to junior Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) for the first of his six goals on the day.

With 6:10 left in the quarter, Martina found the back of the net for the 3-0 lead, which was followed at the 2:50 mark by another Smith goal off an assist from senior Ian Mack (Avon, Conn./Avon) that forced an Eagles timeout. The duo connected again with 55.2 seconds left as the Hounds took a 5-0 lead into the second. The run continued to start the second as sophomore Cameron Murphy (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian) fired a shot just under the crossbar for his first goal of the season, followed by an unassisted goal by Mack for the 7-0 advantage.

Post got on the board with 10:12 left in the first on a goal from Tim Wright that was assisted on by freshman Andrew D'Angelo to make it a 7-1 margin. The Hounds closed the half on a 3-0 run though, capped by a Martina goal on a low shot from the left side for a 10-1 halftime lead.

Opening the third quarter, Smith notched two goals and junior Tim Casey (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) tallied an unassisted score as the Hounds led by a 13-1 advantage with 9:42 left in the third. Post put together a 4-0 run of their own over a period of 9:58 that spanned into the fourth as junior Andrew Supanich scored twice to go along with a goal and an assist from freshman Alex Brownlee to cut the lead down to 13-5 with 12:50 left. The Hounds stretched the lead back out to 10 at 15-5 on a pair of Curran goals over just 1:13, including one that was assisted on by sophomore Nick Guarino (Avon, Conn./Avon) as Curran fired a shot low from the left side.

Post closed the game on a 3-0 run over the last 2:40 of play as Wright, junior Brian Beatson and freshman Kyle Shannon scored to account for the 15-8 final. Beatson was the goalie for the Eagles in the first half before scoring the team's seventh goal of the game as the visitors outscored Assumption 7-5 in the second half.

Smith led the Hounds with six goals as seven different players scored for Assumption in the seven-goal win. Curran registered three goals and three assists, along with two goals and one assist from Martina and one goal and two assists by both Mack and Casey. Supanich had two goals and one assist, along with two goals each by Shannon and Wright and a goal and an assist by Brownlee.

Junior Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) made seven saves in 53 minutes to improve to 1-2 overall, while Beatson made two saves in 30 minutes in the loss. Freshman Matt Castellvi made six saves in his 30 minutes played.

Assumption held a 38-25 lead in shots and won 16-of-27 faceoff chances. The Hounds had a substantial 48-31 edge in ground balls, converted 16-of-18 clear attempts and held the Eagles to just 1-for-7 on man-up chances.

With the win, Assumption improves to 1-2 overall, while the Eagles are now 3-3 and have lost two straight.

Assumption is back in action on Tuesday, March 11th as the Hounds travel to Dominican College for a 4 p.m. start. That game will be played at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
