Worcester, Mass. (February 22) -- On Saturday afternoon, the Assumption College men's lacrosse team dropped its home opener by a 12-4 final to No. 10-ranked Dowling College in a non-conference tilt at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
Dowling improves to 1-0 overall with the win, while Assumption slips to 0-2 overall as the Hounds have now faced back-to-back nationally-ranked opponents.
Senior attacker Kevin McElhone led the Golden Lions in scoring with a game-high six goals, while teammate Chris Stemke accrued six points on four goals and two assists.
Dowling took a 1-0 lead early in the game when McElhone found the net for the game's first goal at 13:09 in the first quarter. Assumption responded with a goal from junior midfielder Ty Martina (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) at 8:16, Martina's first goal of the season. Dowling regained the lead for good when McElhone scored at 7:07 and added its third goal at 2:48 from sophomore midfielder Brian White.
Assumption cut the score down to 4-2 in the second quarter when junior attacker Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) caught a short pass from freshman attacker James Scola (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) at 9:21 and tallied his third goal of 2014. The Golden Lions closed out the half with a pair of goals from Stemke to take a 6-2 lead into the half.
The Greyhounds closed the deficit to 6-3 when junior midfielder Peter Gersbeck (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) scored his first tally of the season at 13:06, but the Golden Lions put the game out of reach with a 5-0 scoring to run over the end of the third and beginning of the fourth to lead 11-3.
Assumption scored its final goal of the game from senior attacker Ian Mack (Avon, Conn./Avon) at 5:39 in the fourth quarter as Mack tallied his team-leading fourth goal.
Dowling outshot Assumption, 36-19 and held a 31-26 advantage on ground balls. Assumption converted 13-of-16 clear attempts, while Dowling was successful on 14-of-22 clear opportunities. The Golden Lions also held a slight 10-9 edge in faceoffs won while converting 2-of-4 extra man opportunities.
Junior goalkeeper Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) was charged with the loss after allowing six goals with three saves in just over 29 minutes played in goal for the Greyhounds. Freshman Matt Comerford (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) played the final 31 minutes in goal and allowed six goals while making seven stops.
White finished the game with a pair of goals and two assists for Dowling while Derek Muzio and Billy Richardson each added an assist. Dowling's Frank Sommers made four saves in goal to record his first win.
Assumption returns to action on March 8th when the Hounds host Post University with a 1 p.m. start time.
