Albany, N.Y. (April 20) -- On Saturday afternoon, the Assumption College men's lacrosse team dropped a 10-5 final to the College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference action on Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
Evan Helming scored a pair of early goals within 29 seconds to stake Saint Rose to an early 2-0 lead in the first. Assumption got on the board with 6:11 left in the period as sophomore Ty Martina (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) scored his 14th goal of the season to cut the edge down to 2-1 heading to the second. The Golden Knights took control in the second period as they rattled off four straight goals to take a 6-1 lead into the halftime break.
Sophomore attack Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) found the back of the net just 2:23 into the third quarter with a man-up goal and a 6-2 score. Saint Rose stretched the lead up to a game-high, six-goal margin at 8-2 before an even-strength goal from Smith with 32 seconds left in the period. The teams were even in the fourth quarter, with each scoring a pair of goals. Finding the net for the Hounds was freshman Connor Munisteri (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) with his fourth goal of the season, followed by a man-up goal from Smith with just 58 seconds left to account for the 10-5 final. The goal is the team-leading 27th of the year for Smith and the 55th of his career.
Smith posted the hat trick, along with a pair of assists from junior Ian Mack (Avon, Conn./Avon). Four Saint Rose players registered multiple goals, led by a three-goal effort from Brett McAuliffe.
Sophomore goalie Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) made 13 saves in the loss, while Nick Longo picked up the win with a five-save effort for the Golden Knights.
With the loss, Assumption falls to 3-9 overall and 3-7 in Northeast-10 play, while Saint Rose improves to 4-10 overall and 4-6 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, April 27th as the Hounds travel to nationally-ranked Merrimack College for the regular-season finale beginning at 1 p.m. in North Andover. The Warriors will be the fifth nationally-ranked opponent the Hounds have faced this season.
