Hounds Win Home Finale Over Pace, 16-11
Worcester, Mass. (April 17) -- In the final home game of the season, the Assumption College men's lacrosse team pulled away in the fourth for a 16-11 victory over visiting Pace University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday afternoon. The Hounds end the home portion of the schedule with three straight victories.
Junior Matt Gebhardt put the Setters ahead by a 1-0 final with 9:47 left in the opening quarter off a pass from senior Matt Mirabito. Assumption answered back less than two minutes later on a man-up goal from sophomore Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) for his 21st goal of the season and a 1-1 score. Mirabito gave Pace the lead with 5:18 left in the quarter before Assumption rattled off six unanswered goals to jump out to a 7-2 lead just 15 seconds into the second quarter. The Hounds held a 6-2 lead after one period and quickly led by the five-goal margin on the 11th goal of the season from sophomore Ty Martina (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield). The score stood at 9-3 midway thru the second quarter before the two teams traded goals over the last seven minutes as Assumption took an 11-5 lead into the break. Assumption freshman Nick Guarino (Avon, Conn./Avon) was dominant on the faceoff in the first half as he won 16 of 18 faceoff attempts over the first two quarters.
After a Martina goal just 56 seconds into the third quarter made it a 12-5 margin, Pace rattled off five straight goals and was in complete control of all the momentum. In that stretch, Gebhardt registered three goals to go along with four assists from Mirabito. Martina ended the Setter scoring run with 7:07 left in the third as he fired a shot across his body into the left side of the net to put the Hounds up by three again at 13-10.
The first four minutes of the fourth were scoreless before Assumption took advantage of its fifth man-up opportunity of the day as Mack found a cutting Smith for the 14-10 lead. Mack and Peter Gersbeck (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) added even-strength goals for the 16-10 edge with 6:47 left as the Hounds regained the momentum and began to pull away. Pace added a late goal to account for the 16-11 final as the Hounds won for the third time in the last four games.
Smith led the Hounds with four goals, along with hat tricks from Martina, Mack and Gersbeck. Sophomore Tim Casey (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) added three assists in the game as well. Guarino enjoyed his best game of the season as he won an incredible 27 of 31 faceoff attempts and finished with a team-high 10 ground balls. Senior Pat Trainor (Webster, Mass./Saint John's) posted eight ground balls as well in his second straight home start.
Gebhardt led the Dolphins with four goals, along with two goals and eight assists from Mirabito.
Sophomore goalie Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) made 10 saves in his third straight home win, while Conor Brophy made 12 saves in the loss for the Setters.
With the win, Assumption improves to 3-8 overall and 3-6 in the Northeast-10, while Pace falls to 5-7 overall and 2-7 in league play.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, April 20th as the team travels to the College of Saint Rose for a 1 p.m. start in Albany, N.Y.
