Hounds Fall at No. 2 Adelphi, 10-7

Garden City, N.Y. (April 9) -- On Tuesday afternoon, the Assumption College men's lacrosse team dropped a 10-7 final to No. 2 ranked Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Panthers are ranked second in this week's USILA Division II National Poll.

The Hounds struck first with 8:59 left in the opening quarter as sophomore Tim Casey (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) took a pass from sophomore Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East  Syracuse Minoa) for the early 1-0 edge. The lead was short-lived though as Adelphi scored the equalizer just 18 seconds later on the fifth goal of the season from Luke Spitzer to tie the game at 1-1. The Panthers extended the lead to 3-1 before a late first-quarter goal from junior Ian Mack (Avon, Conn./Avon) and a goal from sophomore Mike Jednak (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) to open the second quarter tied the game up yet again at 3-3. Adelphi controlled the offense for the remainder of the half though, taking a 5-3 lead into the break.

The Panthers eventually pushed the lead up to 6-3 and continued to hold a three-goal margin early in the fourth before Daniel Fitzgerald (Abington, Mass./Abington) scored to cut the lead down to 8-6 with 10:45 remaining in the game. A man-up goal from Nick Watson with 4:51 left made it a three-goal margin again, as the Panthers came away with the eventual 10-7 victory.

Sophomore goalie Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) made 14 saves in the loss, while Adelphi goalies Eric Janssen and Aidan Bennardo combined for five stops in the victory.

Seven different players scored for Assumption, while Mack, Connor MacNeil (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) and Smith also added assists. Contento led the team with five ground balls, while senior Pat Trainor (Webster, Mass./Saint John's) posted a pair of caused turnovers.

Watson led the Adelphi offense with a hat trick, along with two goals each from Joe Celano and Ikerson Hopper.

Assumption drops to 1-8 overall and 1-6 in the Northeast-10 with the loss, while Adelphi remains perfect at 9-0 overall and 7-0 in the league.
