Hounds Come Up Short in Home Opener, 9-7

Worcester, Mass. (March 14) -- In the 2012 home opener, the Assumption men's lacrosse team dropped a 9-7 final to visiting Saint Rose on Wednesday evening at the Multi-Sport Stadium. The Hounds fall to 0-3 overall on the season, while the Golden Knights even their record at 2-2 in their inaugural campaign.

Assumption jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 10:37 behind goals from Casey Marren (Derby, Conn./Notre Dame) and Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa). The Golden Knights answered with a 4-0 run, including a hat trick from Rich Bamberger, to edge in front by a 4-2 margin with 6:33 left in the first half. After a man-up goal from Chris Noyes (Tewksbury, Mass./Central Catholic) stopped the run, Marren and Smith struck again to put Assumption back on top at 5-4 with 2:07 left in the second quarter. Brett McAuliffe closed out the first-half scoring though with an even-strength goal with 26.7 seconds left for a 5-5 tie at the break.

The teams traded goals over the opening 2:07 of the third quarter before the Golden Knights took the lead for good at 7-6 with 12:01 left on a goal from Kevin Fleming. The Hounds trailed by just one at 8-7 after three quarters, but the Golden Knights held Assumption scoreless over the final quarter for their second straight victory.

Smith led the Hounds with a hat trick, along with an assist, while Marren added two goals. Bamberger led the Golden Knights with four goals as five Saint Rose players found the back of the net.

Matt Palubicki (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) made seven saves for the Hounds in the loss as Assumption forced 28 Saint Rose turnovers in the loss. For the Golden Knights, Nick Longo turned aside 14 shots to pick up the victory.

Assumption is back in action on Saturday, March 17th as the Hounds travel to American International for a 4 p.m. start at Ronald J. Abdow Field.
