Worcester, Mass. (April 20) -- After building to a 9-4 lead at the half, the Assumption men's lacrosse team won for the fourth time in five games as the Greyhounds cruised past American International by a 16-9 final on Wednesday night at the Multi-Sport Stadium. With the win, the Hounds clinch the first playoff spot in program history, with their seeding still to be determined.
The Hounds got on the board just 54 seconds into the game as senior Nick Violandi (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) scored on an assist from Connor MacNeil (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) for the 1-0 lead. Assumption started the game on a 5-0 scoring run, capped by a man-up goal from senior Will Langevin (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) with 5:35 left in the opening quarter. The two teams traded goals over the remainder of the period and the Greyhounds held a 6-2 lead after one. Travis Ortensi scored a man-up goal for the Yellow Jackets with 16 seconds left in the period to the four-goal margin. In the second quarter, Dan MacIsaac got things started for AIC with a pair of goals, but Assumption kept up the pressure and outscored the visitors by a 3-2 margin in the period. MacNeil led the Greyhound offense in the first half with four goals, along with two assists. Senior John Murphy (Walpole, Mass./Bridgton Academy) had a team-best four assists in the opening period.
In the third quarter, Langevin quickly made it a 10-4 advantage before the Yellow Jackets came roaring back and right back into the game. Kevin MacFeat scored with 13:19 left in the period to cut the lead to 10-5, followed by a pair of scores by Aaron McNab that quickly made it a 10-7 contest with 4:34 remaining. Langevin got the Hounds back on track though as he stopped the 3-0 AIC scoring run on a man-up goal with 2:56 left. MacIsaac closed out the third-quarter scoring with his first score of the game and an 11-8 margin after three periods.
Violandi and junior Tom Guido (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) scored in a 59-second span early in the fourth quarter as the Hounds again pushed the lead up to five at 13-8 with 12:29 left. Langevin added three more goals late in the period and finished the game with seven goals overall as Assumption came away with the 16-9 victory. McNab scored late in the quarter to account for the final Yellow Jacket goal.
MacNeil finished up with four goals and three assists, along with four assists for the game from Murphy.
Senior Scott Vogel (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy-Liberty) made nine saves for the Greyhounds in the victory, while AIC netminder Eric Whettell turned aside 12 shots in the defeat.
With the win, Assumption improves to 9-5 overall and 5-4 in Northeast-10 play, while American International falls to 1-11 overall and 1-7 in the league. The Greyhounds are back in action on Saturday, April 30th as the team travels to Saint Michael's for a 4 p.m. start in the regular-season finale.
