Worcester, Mass. (February 11) -- The Ice Dogs defeated Fitchburg State, 3-2, behind an overtime goal by senior forward Pat O'Kane (Hollis, N.H./Bishop Guertin) with 21 seconds to play in the extra period at the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg, Mass. Senior forward Taylor Larsen (Blackstone, Mass./Worcester Academy) and sophomore Nick Mattiello (Johnston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) assisted the marker.
The Ice Dogs got on the board first when O'Kane beat Fitchburg State goaltender Bobby Leiser at the 10:56 mark in the first period for his 12th goal of the season, an unassisted score, to give Assumption a 1-0 lead.
The Falcons knotted the score at one with a goal by Trevor Lawler 67 seconds after the Assumption goal, assisted by Shawn Bradley and Kyle Campana.
Assumption took the lead back on a shorthanded goal by Ken Pia (Guilford, Conn./Xavier), his second goal of the season, assisted by Mike Looney (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) and senior defenseman Kevin Glanzman (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) with four minutes to play in the second period.
Lawler again tied the score for Fitchburg State with 21 seconds to play in the third period on his 11th goal of the season.
That set up O'Kane, who scored his 13th goal of the season, giving Assumption its second consecutive overtime victory.
Sophomore goaltender Bobby Bowden (Springfield, Mass./Williston Northampton) turned away 32 shots to pick up the victory. He moves to 9-2-1 on the season, while Leiser made 36 saves in the loss.
Overall Assumption moves to 12-8-1, including a 7-2-1 record in Northeast-10 play.
The Ice Dogs return to action on Wednesday, February 15th against Framingham State at the Buffone Arena in Worcester, Mass. The game will begin at 6:35 p.m.
