Matthew Kelly Named WACBA Rookie of the Year

WORCESTER, Mass. – Following an impressive freshman season, Assumption guard Matthew Kelly (North Potomac, Md. / Quince Orchard) has been honored as the Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) Rookie of the Year, as announced by the organization on Wednesday.

Kelly led the Hounds in scoring this season, averaging 14.6 points per game while shooting 45.4 percent from the field and ranking second in the conference by playing 37.4 minutes per game. He was seventh in the NE10 with 69 threes while shooting 40.6 percent from deep, while also ranking eighth in the NE10 by shooting 81.9 percent from the free throw line. Kelly also ranked in the top 15 of the NE10 in both assists (85) and steals (32) while averaging 2.7 rebounds per contest. He was a three-time NE10 and WACBA Rookie of the Week, and scored a career-high 36 points in a tight loss to Bentley earlier this year.

In addition to Rookie of the Year honors, Kelly was also named to the All-WACBA Second Team. Marcos Echevarria of Nichols was honored as the Player of the Year while Tom Glynn from Nichols was named Coach of the Year.
