Hounds Outlast Pace, 67-62, to Stay Alive in Playoff Race
Worcester, Mass. (February 18) -- Led by a 23-point effort from junior Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee), the Assumption men's basketball team outlasted Pace in a 67-62 victory on Senior Day as Laska Gym on Saturday afternoon. The Hounds are now tied for ninth in the Northeast-10 standings with Saint Anselm and New Haven with one regular-season game remaining.
The teams traded the lead three times over the first 10 minutes before the Hounds went in front 17-16 with 9:35 left on a three-pointer from the corner by Quick. Quick scored the first nine points of the game for the Hounds, en route to 16 first-half points. A 15-4 run put the hosts in front by as many as 12 with 1:21 on the clock before the Hounds took a 32-25 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Hounds led by as many as nine with 11:39 left before the Setters made a run and cut it to three at 55-52 with 5:41 left on a jumper from Kai Smith. The Setters trimmed the lead all the way down to one with 1:24 left as Keon Williams scored two of his team-high 18 points to make it a 62-61 margin. That set the stage for Quick, who after a Greyhound timeout drilled his third three-pointer of the night to make it a four-point game again as the Hounds won their fourth straight home game.
Quick tied a career high with 23 points, along with 16 from Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington) and 10 from Cory Schmidt (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh). Williams led the Setters with 18 points and eight boards.
Prior to the game, the Hounds honored seniors Mike Auriemma (Manchester, Conn./The Hun School), Shachar Birendorf (Petah-Tiqva, Israel/Ehad-Haam), Akil Hodge (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull), Jeff Stewart (Herndon, Va./Flint Hill School) and Brandon Wooten (Norwell, Mass./Norwell), along with team manager Michelle Lubas, as part of Senior Day.
With the win, the Hounds improve to 12-13 overall and 10-11 in Northeast-10 play and have now won four of their last five games. Pace drops to 13-12 overall with the defeat and is now 11-10 in league play.
Assumption closes out the regular season on Tuesday, February 21st as the Hounds travel to American International for a 7:30 p.m. start in Springfield, Mass.
