Falcons Rally Past Hounds in Second Half in 60-57 Final

Waltham, Mass. (January 3) -- After holding the Falcons to just 14 first-half points, the Assumption men's basketball team couldn't hold off a second-half Bentley charge as the Hounds dropped a 60-57 final to the Falcons at the Dana Center on Tuesday night in Northeast-10 play.

In a very slow moving first half, the Hounds took an early 9-2 lead after a three-pointer from senior Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington) with 12:56 left in the opening period. Assumption added to that lead over the next nine minutes and with 4:02 left, the Hounds led 16-5. Holding Bentley to just a free throw over a stretch of over 16 minutes at one point, Assumption built the lead into double figures at 18-7. Another quick 8-3 run, capped by a pair of free throws from freshman Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic), gave Assumption its biggest lead of the period at 26-10. The teams traded baskets over the remainder of the period as the Hounds took a 28-14 edge into the halftime break.

In the opening minutes of the second, the Hounds still led by double digits at 38-26 before a three from Jasper Grassa made it a 38-29 Assumption lead with 12:51 left. Three minutes later, back-to-back three-pointers from Andrew Shaw and Dan O'Keefe cut the Assumption lead back down to three at 39-36 with just over 10 minutes remaining, forcing a Greyhound timeout. The Hounds ended the run though on a jumper by Donahue just as the shot clock was about to expire to again make it a five-point game at 41-36. A layup by Greg Jacques and three free throws from Grassa tied the game at 41-41, the first tie game since the opening minute of the game.

After the Hounds led for the next four minutes, Grassa tied the game on a pair of free throws and the Falcons eventually took a 52-48 lead after back-to-back layups from Kevin Kettl and Jacques. The Falcons extended the lead to five before the Hounds again made it a one-possession game following a layup from captain Tim Beinert (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Holy Cross). After forcing a wayward Bentley shot with 30 seconds left, the Hounds pulled down the rebound and called timeout with 20.8 seconds left and trailing 58-55. Off the ensuing play, junior Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) knocked down a baseline jumper with 7.6 seconds left before the Hounds sent Grassa to the line for a pair on the ensuing inbounds. Grassa knocked down both for the Falcons with 6.3 seconds remaining, making it a 60-57 margin. After a Greyhound timeout with 3.4 seconds left, a three-pointer by Quick at the buzzer was wide as the Falcons came away with the victory.

Donahue led the Hounds with a game-high 23 points, while three Falcons finished in double figures.

With the loss, the Hounds fall to 6-6 overall and 4-4 in Northeast-10 play, while the Falcons are now 10-2 overall and 6-2 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Saturday, January 6th as the Hounds play host to Southern New Hampshire for a 3:30 p.m. start at Laska Gym. That game is available live online at www.assumptiongreyhounds.com.
