Hounds Drop Heartbreaker at Buzzer in Opener, 78-76
Pleasantville, N.Y. (November 11) -- Cory Quimby knocked down a jumper at the buzzer for Dominican to lift the Chargers to a 78-76 win over Assumption in the season opener for both teams on Friday evening at the Pace University Tip-Off Classic. Quimby scored the last 10 points of the game as the Hounds were also held scoreless over the final 2:44 of the game.
The Chargers jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the opening 2:53 before junior Mike Auriemma (Manchester, Conn./The Hun School) knocked down a three-pointer to end the run. After the Hounds tied the game at 15-15, Assumption took its first lead of the game with 8:42 left as freshman Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic) scored on a layup for the 21-20 edge. The Hounds led by as many as six points twice over the last nine minutes before Assumption took a 37-35 edge heading into the halftime break.
In the second half, the game was a one-possession contest over a 13-minute stretch before an 8-2 run by Assumption gave the Hounds a 76-68 lead with 2:44 left after a layup from Auriemma. From that point on though, the Charger defense forced three Assumption turnovers and Quimby took over for Dominican as he scored the last 10 points of the game to pull out the victory. In that stretch, he hit two free throws and was 4-for-4 from the field, including a game-winning jumper as time expired. He ended the game with a 26-point, 14-rebound double-double as three Chargers finished in double figures.
Zenevitch scored a team-high 25 points in his first collegiate game as he was 11-for-16 from the field and added eight rebounds. Captain Tim Beinert (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Holy Cross) added 11 points to go along with eight rebounds and six assists, while Auriemma and Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) each contributed 13 points off the bench.
With the loss, the Hounds drop to 0-1 on the season, while the Chargers sit at 1-0. Assumption is back in action on Saturday evening, taking on Nyack in a 6 p.m. start on day two of the Pace University Tip-Off Classic.
