Worcester, Mass. (October 20) -- On Senior Night on Thursday evening, the Assumption College field hockey team fell by a 3-1 margin to No. 5 nationally-ranked UMass Lowell at the Multi-Sport Stadium. Prior to the game, the Greyhounds honored seniors Catie Lopes (Needham, Mass./Needham), Hannah Sherrill (Holden, Mass./Holy Name) and Amanda Whaley (No. Kingstown, R.I./No. Kingstown) for their contributions to the program.
After nearly 15 minutes of scoreless play, the River Hawks got on the board on the third goal of the season by Sarah Wilcox and took a 2-0 into halftime following a goal by Ali Ferraro with just 1:35 left in the opening period.
Assumption got on the board at the 51:57 mark on the first goal of the season by Whaley, assisted on by freshman Paige Anderson (Suffield, Conn./Suffield). Cori Trask tallied a late goal for the River Hawks to account for the 3-1 final as Lowell held off the second-half Assumption momentum following the goal by Whaley.
Freshman goalie Lauren Neilan (Mendon, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) was outstanding in goal for the Hounds, turning aside 13 shots in her first career start. Melanie Hopkins made four saves in net for the River Hawks in the win.
Assumption closes out the 2011 season on Saturday afternoon as the Hounds travel to Franklin Pierce for a 1 p.m. start.
