Greyhounds Fall In Double Overtime at Southern Connecticut

New Haven, Conn. (September 6) -- In the 2011 season opener on Tuesday night, the Assumption College field hockey team dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 final in double overtime to Southern Connecticut at Jess Dow Field. The game is the first for the Greyhounds under the direction of first-year head coach Annie Lahey.

Senior Catie Lopes (Needham, Mass./Needham) put Assumption on the board with just over five minutes left in the opening half, scoring off a rebound for the 1-0 advantage. The Owls continued to trail until late in regulation when Sarah Cebry scored on a tip-in off a pass from Erica Fisher to send the game into extra periods.

After a scoreless first overtime, the game seemed to be headed for penalty strokes before Fisher scored the game winner with 3:49 left in the second overtime for the 2-1 victory. Ryan Morgan assisted on the game-winning tally.

Sophomore goalie Heather Philbrick (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) made eight saves for the Greyhounds, while Robin Donaldson made three stops for the Owls.

With the loss, the Greyhounds fall to 0-1 overall, while the Owls improve to 1-2 on the season.

The Greyhounds open the home schedule on Thursday evening under the lights as the team hosts Franklin Pierce University for a 7 p.m. start.
