Football's DiAntonio Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

Worcester, Mass. (April 3) -- Assumption College football senior linebacker Nick DiAntonio (Milford, Mass./Milford) has been selected to receive one of 29 national NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships awarded to male student-athletes who participated in fall sports. DiAntonio will attend Boston College beginning in May 2012 to earn a master's degree in education, and will receive a $7,500 scholarship from the NCAA.

To qualify, student-athletes must excel academically and athletically, be in their final year of eligibility and plan to pursue graduate study. Student-athletes must also maintain a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 and be nominated by their institution's Faculty Athletics Representative. DiAntonio currently has a cumulative GPA of 3.98.

"Nick is the type of student-athlete that teachers like to have in class and teammates like to have on the field. He epitomizes that combination of intelligence, community service and athletic ability that separates him from others, and has given him the national recognition that comes with this award,"said Associate Professor Kevin Hickey, the College's Faculty Athletics Representative to the NCAA.

"Nick is the 16th Assumption College student-athlete to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, making Assumption number one in the Northeast-10 Conference in securing postgraduate scholarships and currently number eight among all Division II NCAA colleges across the country. Assumption also ranks among the top 10 of all Division I, II, and III NCAA colleges in New England for these scholarships, an accomplishment that we share with universities such as Harvard, MIT and Boston College."

DiAntonio is a double major in math and secondary education, as well as a theology minor at Assumption. He has received the Assumption College Premier Student-Athlete Award for six straight semesters for a perfect 4.0 GPA, and also earned the Athletic Director's Citation in the Fall of 2008. In the Fall of 2011, DiAntonio was awarded the Ray Marion Award, which is given to a select group of students with the top GPAs in the Assumption senior class.

In addition, he was recognized as a two-time Augustine Scholar, an award which is given at the Assumption College Honors Convocation each spring. Recipients of this merit scholarship are nominated by a faculty member or administrator on the basis of their high academic achievement, who have demonstrated initiative and creativity in co-curricular endeavors and who have demonstrated good character.

In the 2011 season, DiAntonio ranked second in the Northeast-10 and 13th in the nation in tackles per game at 10.60. A team captain, he ended the season with 106 total tackles, including a 21-tackle performance against Southern Connecticut that tied the single-game school record. For his performance in that game, DiAntonio was named as the D2Football.com National Defensive Player of the Week, as well as the Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

For his efforts, DiAntonio has earned a number of conference and regional awards this season. A Northeast-10 First Team All-Conference selection, DiAntonio also received the Northeast-10 Conference Football Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award and was a unanimous Academic All-Conference selection.

In addition, he was named as a Daktronics Second Team All-Region selection, as well as being named to the Don Hansen Football Gazette All-Region Third Team.
