He looks like a football coach, talks about winning conference titles and graduating each and every player. Talk like that interests everyone involved with Assumption College football.
Cory Bailey, back for his second go-round with the Greyhounds after a year in the private sector, led the team to a 6-4 record in 2009.
His Greyhounds usually make opponents remember exactly who they knocked heads with that day. His game plan is to play every game like it was important. Having played at Fordham University where the team is watched over by the shadow of Vince Lombardi, he also has a little of Vince in him.
You get a sense of where you stand right away in his presence. You are important, but his team comes first and in his words it must be just that---a team.
He is young, affable, intelligent, motivated and driven.
The 33-year-old Bailey was a standout performer for Coach Nick Quataro at Fordham University from 1994-97. He earned first team all-Patriot League honors at center in both 1996 and 1997 and was a pre-season all America selection in several publications prior to the 1997 season. He captained the team in 1997 and was named its Most Valuable Player.
He was also a all-scholastic performer at Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, MA.
He was graduated from Fordham with a bachelor of arts in economics with a minor in communications in May 1998.
After graduation he signed as a free agent with the National Football League's New York Giants and survived through official mini-camp and summer camp. He also was a clinician at the New Jersey High School Coaches' Clinic.
In June 1999 he was named an assistant coach at Dean College (Franklin, MA)---coaching both the defensive line and the special teams --- and also coordinated the strength and conditioning programs. The defense was ranked second in the nation among junior college programs. He recently (February) became a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist.
In January 2000 he was named assistant coach at Iona College (New Rochelle, NY)-- coaching tight ends, offensive tackles and long snappers. He left Iona to play professionally with the Rhein Fire (Dusseldorf, Germany) in NFL Europe . . . after being a seventh-round draft selection. He started at offensive guard and did all the long snapping while also participating in film breakdown and scouting of opponents.
He coached at King Philip Regional (Wrentham, MA)--- as both the head freshman coach and varsity defensive coordinator and offensive line coach. After an internship with the NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers (summer 2003), he assumed duties at Assumption College.
