West Haven, Conn. (March 22) -- In a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Saturday, the Assumption College baseball team picked up a doubleheader split with the University of New Haven on Saturday at Frank Vieria Field. The Hounds dropped a 6-0 final in game one, followed by an 8-4 victory in the second game. Assumption is currently receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Region Poll, while the Chargers are ranked fourth in that poll.
In game one, the Chargers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first as New Haven put together three hits and took advantage of an Assumption error. The Chargers had senior Brandon Buckley in scoring position with two outs and came home on an RBI double to center by senior Chris DeMorais. Junior Kyle Cullen followed that with a double to left that scored DeMorais from second for the 2-0 lead. Cullen eventually stole third and came home on an Assumption throwing error for the 3-0 edge.
The score stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth when DeMorais scored his second run of the game on an RBI groundout by sophomore TJ Riccio for a 4-0 lead. DeMorais reached to lead off the inning with a single to right field. The Chargers closed out the scoring in the bottom of the eighth with a pair of runs off Assumption freshman reliever Brad Pepitpas (Boston, Mass./Worcester Academy) to account for the 8-0 final. Three hits keyed that inning, including RBI hits from sophomore Nick Nunziato and junior Zach Collett.
Assumption sophomore Anthony Perry (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) went six innings in the start, scattering eight hits with four runs (three earned) to go along with three walks and five strikeouts as he fell to 1-1 on the season. For New Haven, senior Frank Vilacha went the distance for a complete-game shutout as he scattered six hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
Freshman first baseman Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) picked up a pair of hits in the loss to go along with 12 putouts in the game. For the Chargers, four different players finished with a pair of hits, while Riccio ended up with two runs batted in.
In game two, junior Zack LaRosa (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) picked up the win for the Hounds as he went seven innings while scattering five hits with one run allowed and five strikeouts as he improved to 1-1 overall.
Assumption picked up a pair of runs in the top of the second for a 2-0 lead over the Chargers. Junior Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) reached on a leadoff fielding error as the Hounds eventually loaded the bases with one out. Freshman Matt Murphy (Wakefield, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) drove in O'Donnell on an RBI groundout to third, followed by junior Kelvin Sims (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) later scoring on a wild pitch for the second run. Sims had reached earlier in the frame on a single to left.
An RBI single to center O'Donnell scored sophomore Colin Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) for a 3-0 lead in the third before the Chargers finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a single run. In that inning, senior Andrew Johnson led off with a triple to center and scored on a single up the middle by DeMorais.
Assumption added two runs in the eighth, highlighted by a leadoff home run to left by senior Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech). O'Donnell had an RBI sacrifice fly in the inning as well that scored Clancy. After the Chargers put up a pair in the bottom of the eighth to cut the margin to just 5-3, the Hounds put the game out of reach with a three-run ninth.
Figueroa led the ninth-inning outburst with a two-RBI single to right, along with an RBI groundout by junior Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass./Holy Name) that scored senior Bret Clark (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central). New Haven scored a single run in the ninth off Assumption senior reliever Bill King (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) as the Hounds earned the split with the 8-4 victory.
Figueroa, Johnson and sophomore catcher Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc) each finished with two hits, along with three runs batted in by Figueroa.
While LaRosa got the win for the Hounds, senior Derek Drag took the loss for New Haven as he went seven innings allowing just four hits with three runs (one earned), one walk and four walks.
With the split, Assumption is now 5-5 overall and 1-1 in Northeast-10 play, while New Haven sits at 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the league. Both teams are still 0-0 in their divisions.
Assumption is back in action on Sunday, March 23rd as the Hounds take on Southern Connecticut in a Northeast-10 doubleheader that will be played at Baseball Heaven on Long Island beginning at Noon.
